Questions about PERL
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 6, 2009
I'm a perl-newbie; actually I don't care so much about writing perl applications, but only manage it for server-related purpose (like SpamAssassin)
- how can I lists the perl module installed on my system (in the cpan environment)?
- how can I upgrade a perl "package" (for ex. SpamAssassin)?
- it's necessary to manually uninstall any previous application when upgrading something with cpan?
Questions about Arch linux..
location: linux.com - date: October 25, 2011
So after discovering the latest Ubuntu release, I've decided to change linux distros. Ubuntu decided to go the user-friendly path with it's new update. I've always gone for somewhere in between user friendly and complex, and I should probably choose one or the other, so I'm interested in Arch Linux, and I have a few questions about it.
Is it a command line installer? I've heard you'll need to check out the wiki guide on installing, problem is can I view it while installing? otherwise I'm gonna have to print it out, which is a pain (since I don't have a separate laptop). I've heard Gentoo is the most confusing linux OS out there, and Arch looks pretty complex as well, so how confusing it in comparison?
Also, what desktop environment does it use?
I have no more blank cd's at the moment, so I'm going to install Linux Mint for now, but I would like to move onto something else at some point.
A few questions about creating an LVM
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 26, 2012
My current setup is a 18GB root, 400GB /home, 2GB swap, 80GB Windows.
Is /home automatically separated?
Can I reinstall root without wiping home?
How much space on my 500GB drive should be allocated to the LVM? It'll dual-boot with a Windows 8 partition. This partition will also be the one that both OSes share.
Questions about 13.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 4, 2013
Hello, I just deleted Windows 8 and installed Ubuntu 13.04, and I was wondering about downgrading to 12.04 LTS because apparently 13.04 will only be supported until January 2014. CAn someone shed some light on this? Is there any benefit to having the LTS? Or should I just wait to upgrade to 14.04?
Questions about Ubuntu Studio for Dell Latitude D620
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 25, 2013
I am a musician getting ready to do some experimenting with Linux-based music programs. I remember my days of using Anvil Studio and Audacity as well as Virtual Instruments on Windows, and I want to give it a try on Linux. Thing is, I'm not just a musician, I'm involved in other creative pursuits to the extent that Ubuntu Studio might be a possible choice.
Now here's the deal. I know about Audacity and SOME Virtual Instrument products (I can't afford an actual synth keyboard.), and I know Ubuntu Studio has these. But I know absolutely nothing about this JACK program (which I've read doesn't seem to work well on a Dell Latitude D620 laptop, which is what I have). What is JACK, and what's it really for? Do I absolutely have to use it in order to record ANY music at all? Is it involved with the Virtual Instrument programs, or can I just use the Virtual Instruments to hammer out and record ideas and save them for later working in Audacity (the program I'm most familiar with)?
Questions about installing Ubuntu to an external 3 TB hard drive
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 5, 2013
I have Ubuntu (latest version) that I installed on a USB drive using Linux Live USB creator. I wanted to make sure that the installation program detected my external drive properly, and showed the correct amount of space on the drive, and it did, and I'm glad about that. I am going to make plans to attempt to install Ubuntu on my external drive after I get back from vacation. I would like some detailed help on installing to an external drive with as few problems as possible. The one thing that I do need to know in advance is where to put the program that loads linux when I turn on my computer. I intend to install linux on my external drive so that it doesn't mess up my windows installation. I know I'm a "newbie", even though I did have Linux on my old Win98 PC, but I need to "get with the program" and run it on my current windows computer. If I've confused you guys in any way, let me know.

Two questions about Ubuntu for Tablets.
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 20, 2013
How soon with we be able to buy a Nexus 7 with Ubuntu pre-installed? Will the tablet UI be an option for the x86 version of Ubuntu? This would be very useful for people who have older x86 tablets, like those manufactured by Fujitsu.
Questions About Terminal / SSH
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 31, 2013
If a connect to another computer via ssh on terminal, am I effectively using that os in terminal?
Right now I'm connected to a user account on a Scientific Ubuntu computer through ssh. I'm attempting to install OpenCV. Is that something I can do? By accessing terminal, do I have access to all the functions available on that computer, like installing new software?
Security in Linux, and questions about a few programs
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 5, 2009
Hello, one of the Linux nubies here. I have an important question, do I need any type of security software in Linux, like antivirus software, or firewall? But I've heard that you don't get much viruses and exploits in Linux (but quite a few.) Also, could you recommend some programs to me? I'm using Ubuntu as well. 9.4(need to install the latest one.) I've heard that Pulse audio can cause problems too, so removed that too because it kept messing with my sound, and it made certain things lag and I use alsa now. What about programs for listening to music what mediaplayer applications work with Alsa?
