Read data from USB port
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 21, 2011
I have just got a new USB device (Ventus W831 weather station) that I would like to get data from. I have used the program Weather Display with no luck, and now I just want to see if I can get the data stream from the USB port.
When I plugin the USB cable, the files /dev/hidraw0 and /dev/usb/hiddev0 appears. I have tried to use "sudo cat /dev/hidraw0" (for both files), but I get no output.
I am running 9.10, but I have also tried briefly in a live 11.04 - also without luck.
The output of lsusb is as follows:

Read raw data from USB port
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 18, 2009
Background: I have a CMS 50e pulse oximeter which I need to use for sleep studies to tell, while sleeping, when my percent of oxygen gets too low, how low it gets, and how many events below 87% saturation occur. I desperately wish to discontinue my nighttime oxygen use through dieting and exercizing. To do this, I must do periodic sleep studies.
Obstacle: the pulse oximeter will record up to 24 hours of data which uploads to my laptop through a USB connection. The software is poorly engineered, almost impossible to install (drivers try to install over other devices in use,) and contains sorely deficient documentation. The data is still uploading when the software generates its report, so report suddenly stops at random amounts of data. Searching on the internet, I have discovered that this is a common (universal?) problem
Hopeful workaround: The data is stored in CSV format. If I could capture data stream for entire upload, I could import it into Open Office and cr
Cannot read data from serial port from Ubuntu guest on a OSX host
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 27, 2014
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 in VirtualBox on a OSX Mavericks host. I am trying to read data from Arduino through serial port. I enabled port 1 in vm, the setting is:
Port Number: COM1 IRQ:4 I/O Port: 0x3F8 Port Mode: Dis connected. Create Pipe(unticked) Port/File Path: /dev/tty.submodem1411
In the virtual machine, the port can be found. When I use setserial trying to find the ports, the output is:
/dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
/dev/ttyS1, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
/dev/ttyS2, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03e8, IRQ: 4
/dev/ttyS3, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02e8, IRQ: 3
Although the port can be found, it does not getting data data from the serial port. I've read the manual for virtualBox and understand this is happening because I un-ticked the port mode is disconnected. However, I really don't know how to set up the file path properly if select Host Device or Host Pipe.
The Arduino serial port is called tty.submodem1411 in the host system. What I've tried are
How do I read data from serial port in Linux using C?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: December 22, 2011
I am new to serial programming in Linux using C. I have found a small piece of code to write data on serial port which I am sharing here. After running this code I may assume that data has written on a specific port. Now I would like to open another terminal and using separate code want to read the data written on that specific port - how do I do that?
#include <stdio.h> /* Standard input/output definitions */
#include <string.h> /* String function definitions */
#include <unistd.h> /* UNIX standard function definitions */
#include <fcntl.h> /* File control definitions */
#include <errno.h> /* Error number definitions */
#include <termios.h> /* POSIX terminal control definitions */
* 'open_port()' - Open serial port 1.
* Returns the file descriptor on success or -1 on error.
int fd; /* File descriptor for the port */
fd = open("/dev/ttyS0", O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_NDELAY);
if (fd == -1)
How to read data from Game Port with Python?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
I like programming with robots and stuff. For this approach, I'm using the LPT port for output and the Gameport for input.
For younger guys: Just some old fashioned USB Ports ;-)
With Python (and the fabulous module pyParallel) the output works very, very well.
Now I'd really like to get data from the Game Port (like photo tubes, temperatur sensors etc.). How can I accomplish this?
Ah, by the way: I'm using Ubuntu for all that stuff.

Not receiving any data from UDP port to the application running on Virtual Box
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 24, 2010
I am running an application on Ubuntu Linux which is running on a virtual box.That application uses UDP sockets to broadcast some data to the host network and expect the response from the device connected in the host network.The data has been sent , but i am not able to receive any data from the host network.
Using Wireshark,I am able to see that the data has been sent from the network, but i am not getting any response..
Plz help me out for finding out a solution to the problem..
Problem in reading data from serial port.
location: linux.com - date: February 18, 2010
I am writing code for reading & writing the data from serial port (UART of ARM Processor).
But i am facing a problem in reading.
As written in man page the read() call returns the character till it will get "Enter/Carriage return" or "EOF". I am interfacing the GPRS modem on this serial port. So from Modem there is no way to get me "Enter/Carriage return" or "EOF".
Because of this read() gets blocked.
Is there any other way to just read the received characters without EOF & returns that characters?
Please help me for this.
