What happened exactly to Red Hat Linux on the desktop? How far did they get?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 28, 2009
I mean, I know Fedora is the new name for desktop Red Hat and I know it's doing fairly well, but it doesn't seem to be showing anywhere near the drive and the growth that Ubuntu is, particularly for casual users or pre-installed on machines.
Screwdriver0815 linked me to this video on Youtube -
and it looks to me as if Red Hat was trying to do exactly the same thing that Ubuntu is. So, are Ubuntu just getting further? Did Red Hat step back from the progression of desktop Linux, at least for casual day-to-day users such as home users? I'm just confused because compared to Ubuntu they seem very quiet especially when you take their old adverts into account.
So... what's happening with them? o.O

Red Hat Linux 9 installation problem
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 27, 2006
i have a problem installing my red hat linux 9 from both hard drive and CD.
when it ask me to select the partition and the directory holding images it gives me the following error:
"Device /dev/hdd1 does not appear to contain Red Hat CDROM images"
when trying to install directly from CD-ROM drive it gives me:
"The Red Hat Linux CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the Red Hat Linux CD and press ok to retry."
By the way the first CD doesn't boot after i changed my BIOS setting to boot from CD-ROM drive so i press F8 and choose "command prompt" and use this file to start the installation /dosutils/autoboot.bat
also i made a boot diskette ( from bootdisk.img using rawrite utility ) to start the installation it gives me the first error "Device /dev/hdd1 does not appear to contain...etc" when it reach this step.
i copied the first cd to my hard drive C:\ partition under folde

[SOLVED] system error when upgrade glibc in a cluster with Red Hat linux
- date: June 13, 2012
I would like to upgrade glibc to glibc-2.7. I downloaded glibc-2.7.tar.gz as well as glibc-linuxthreads2.5.tar.gz, and try following commands:
#tar -zxvf glibc-2.7.tar.gz
#tar -zxvf ../glibc-linuxthreads-2.5.tar.gz
#export CFLAGS="-g -O2 -march=i486"
#./glibc-2.7/configure --prefix=/usr --disable-profile --enable-add-ons --with-headers=/usr/include --with-binutils=/usr/bin --disable-sanity-checks
However, the system returns error when I set configure as below
test]# ./glibc-2.7/configure --prefix=/usr --disable-profile --ena
ble-add-ons --with-headers=/usr/include --with-binutils=/usr/bin --disable--sanity-checks
checking build system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
checking host system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu

OpenLDAP configuration on Red Hat Linux 5.4
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 13, 2011
I have a RHEL 5.4 server installed in a server farm. The server is administered under a central AD, which means that administrators are registered in the AD.
However, I have to deploy an application on the linux server, that will use it's own OpenLDAP server. This means that this application will be the client to the LDAP server installed on the same RHEL server.
I tried installing OpenLDAP using yum and it resulted in a very fatal issue. Somehow the configuration files used for finding the Linux server from the AD was overwritten and the Linux server was not reachable anymore.
After some investigations, and possibly, rebuild, the server has been handed over to me.
The problem is how should I install OpenLDAP so that the existing connection to AD is not lost.
It will be great if someone could assist with this.
On the Linux server I see a /etc/openldap directory but only contains ldap.conf and cacerts directory.
Help will be highly appreciated!
