Unable to get Java running on my redhat box.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 25, 2006
Recently a very kind friend of mine was nice enough to hand over a dv to me (dedicated virtual server). Seeing as how this has a good amount of bandwidth and I am provided with ssh access I decided to setup a blog based on blojsom This means that I would need to install java, tomcat, mod_jk and blojsom itself...
The only thing is that this box is running Red Hat which is not exactly the debian/ubuntu flavor that I'm used to. I did install apt and configured some repositories to try and get it feeling a little more like debian, but rpm sure isn't dpkg despite the similarities.
For a while I mulled around trying to decide what the best method of getting java on this box wold be. First I tried looking for the JDK on DAG Wieers repos, no luck. So I moved on to the fresh rpms repos, still no luck on a JDK rpm. In my searching I stumbled across the jpackage repositories, took a look around, and realized I understood very little of what they where trying to explain and went straight
gnomepowermanager vs. powertop: battery life discrepancy
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 24, 2008
I've installed Intrepid on a Toshiba Tecra M4 tablet pc, and I'm trying to improve my battery life. Powertop estimates my power usage at around 18-19 watts, for a battery life of around 4 hours. However, gnome-power-manager gives my battery life as 2 hours. And judging from the rate of power drain, gnome-power-manager is correct.
Why is my actual battery life, as reported by gnome-power-manager, only half of what's estimated by powertop? Is this normal, or is something seriously wrong? I get about 4 hours in Vista, so this shouldn't be unreasonable. 2 hours is, however.
Thanks for anyone's help.
Redhat 9 disk space full when not supose to be?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 24, 2004
First off I've been teaching myself linux for a year now.. So I don't know to much.
I have installed Red-Hat 9 on a 100GB hard-drive and have frequently ran up2date.
I also have put on samba so I can copy my files to a "Storage" place on my linux hdd.
Now I can't copy any more files because it says that my disk is filled up.. In fact it won't even start the GUI X Server because it is full. This can't be true because last time I checked I had 65% free space on the hdd, and that was yesterday..
Does anyone know any programs I can use to correct this? Or what is constantly making it say that it's full
when I do "df -h" it looks like this:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 91G 87G 0 100% /
/dev/hda1 101M 14M 82M 15% /boot
none 236M 236M 236M 0% /dev/shm
FYI: I only have 1 hard

Battery life on laptops in Natty 11.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 31, 2011
Has anyone else had lower battery life when using Ubuntu 11.04? I have a Dell Studio 1558. On Lucid and Maverick I would get a good four hours of battery life. For Natty, I only get an hour, and my fan is pretty darn loud.
I know, what you'll are going to say, it's an alpha release you should expect it. I'm just wondering if I'm not the only one and if this would affect my average battery life if I keep this going...
Overall, I'm loving Unity!
Should I put the swap partition at the beginning or the end of the drive?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 22, 2005
I did a search, but I didn't find the answer. Where do I get better performance? Putting my swap at the beginning of the drive or the end of it? I've installed Linux soooo many times and never bothered to ask. I just put an 80GB hard drive into my Sony PCG-F180 and even though the hard drive is 5400 RPM, I need more speed (it's a PII333, 192mb RAM....every little but helps)
P.S. I'm installing slack 10.2
Make upstart job wait for VirtualBox to end gracefully
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 30, 2012
I've been trying for hours and hours to figure out a way of running a VirtualBox machine when my system boots using upstart. I've been able to get it to boot successfully, but I can't seem to make upstart wait for it to close properly. Instead the Virtual Machine just gets killed, and loses all its active state. The guest is configured to immediately shutdown when it receives the acpishutdown signal from VBoxManage.
This is my upstart script:
#Start Transmission's Virtual Machine on boot
description "Transmission Virtual Machine"
start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up IFACE=eth0)
stop on runlevel
respawn limit 5 10
kill timeout 20
exec sudo -u sean VBoxManage controlvm "Transmission Server" acpipowerbutton
while [ "$inactive" == "0" ]; do
inactive=`vboxmanage showvminfo "Transmission Server" | grep -E "No active

GUI front end for 7zip?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 5, 2008
I installed 7-zip and hunted around for it everywhere on the desktop until I realized it was a CLI utility. Is there a GUI front end for it somewhere?
