location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 26, 2014
I've EOL release of Ubuntu 13.10. Now I want to upgrade to next release. For this I read many sites. So herein I would like to clarify & confirm ways for the same.
1) This site of ubuntu mentions how to upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04.
It says to make sure the sources.list (/etc/apt/sources.list) has the following:
Battery Life Ubuntu Vs. Windows
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 3, 2009
I've always just accepted that my battery life is pretty crap on my laptop, but I booted windows the other (hasnt been done in about 3 months) and when I usually have about 35 minutes at 40% charge, I had an hour under windows. Does anybody know why this could be?
Advice with installation Ubuntu Vs Redhat Vs Fedora?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 26, 2011
I have a server at godaddy on Red Hat Fedora Core 8 and I want to set up a home server for development and backups for the live server.
The server i bought for home use is set up for RAID usage. I want the server to mirror the harddrives so whatever i do on one is saved on the other too. There was a step in the setup where it asks to partition the drives It asks if I want to LVM the drives with or without encryption or just partition the whole thing.
Realistically the ultimate goal of my home server is to have 2 or 3 people working from their macs and code on the server so we can test how the live server would react without uploading it to the live server. We will use version tracker.
Anyone have any advice or instructions on how to install? And whether or not I have to buy the Red Hat license or according to info provided I should use the Fedora project version?
Ubuntu Karmic vs Redhat 5.4 as Xen dom0
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 3, 2010
I'm looking to consolidate a couple of windows boxes and some linux machines on to one piece of hardware using Xen.
I investigated using Karmic, but when I started reading the docs I was a little dismayed to learn you need to bring over a Debian kernel with Xen support. Should I be using Hardy for a production Xen server?
RHEL 5.4 has a Xen kernel on the cd. I prefer a more open distro but should I be considering Redhat? I know this is an Ubuntu forum but I expect to get unbiased answers!
Package names on Ubuntu vs Redhat
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 7, 2008
I am trying to install Merak mail server on Ubuntu server 8.04-1. The problem is that Merak is certified for RH5/4 so installing Merak on Ubuntu needs a little extra effort to work. I am trying to install the following libraries and dependencies, but the naming convention seems a bit different on Redhat than that of Ubuntu. Can someone please enlighten me on how I find the equivalent packages on Ubuntu? Where do I start?
CPU - PC 486
Memory - 64MB RAM
Linux kernel 2.4.x and higher
glibc library 2.2.x and higher
No other modules are required to be installed.
Cost of support for RedHat Desktop 5 vs Ubuntu
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 7, 2008
I'm going to download an evaluaiton version of RedHat 5 Desktop. I see the yearly subscription for RedHat Desktop 5 is US$80.
I see that Desktop support from Canonical is US$293.76 for one year (9 to 5) or US$1,057.50 (24/7).
I live in Australia. Does the RedHat cost of US$80 per year offer the same value of support compared to Canonical or do they have some support ticket programme that could mean RedHat support could wind up being more expensive than support from Canonical?
I'm asking because I want to buy a new confusor this year. I was thinking of buying a Mac (and put Ubuntu on that as well as the Mac OS plus Windows) but I'm mindufl of the price difference between PCs and Macs.
I'm a Web Developer. The Mac would be ideal for me but it's more affordable for me to have a PC with Linux (for development and general use) and Windows (for compatibility testing) on it.
I've been using Kubuntu 7.04 as my main OS but as I've got a list of clients now I'm thinking I s
Ubuntu vs Redhat/CentOS in the Enterprise.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 19, 2012
So I'm a linux noob, been using Fedora(on my desktop) and CentOS(on my servers) for a few years now. I just had an interview for a company I really like. I'm mostly going to be doing the VMware / EMC stuff, but they run Postfix, amongst other things, on Ubuntu server. Now I've always been of the mind that I would learn one thing really well in IT before I would move on to other products. I don't feel like two years of RH/COS would put me in a position to know it well. I'd like to get my RHSA/E, but is this Ubuntu thing going to screw me up?
Porting application from Redhat to Ubuntu
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 17, 2011
Does anybody have any pointers on what are the steps necessary to be done to port an application from RedHat Linux to Ubuntu 10.04. For example can I take an application that is compiled on Redhat and run it directly on an Ubuntu box. I do understand that I would need to recompile the application on Redhat but was wondering if anybody has tried to run an app compiled one distro on another distro without recompiling.
Also any pointers to articles which list info on porting from Redhat to Ubuntu.

I am finding conflicting reports of Ubuntu's battery life feature on the CR48. Is anyone familiar with how much the battery can be maxed to on Ubuntu vs the Chrome OS 48?
