Learn redhat ES on CentOS or Fedora?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 15, 2006
Other than genuine redhat enterprise edition, what is the best distro for training for the rhce? CentOS? Fedora? Something else?
Are there some substantial facilities in Redhat ES, that don't exist elsewhere?
Am I correct in assuming that the rhce exam is primarily aimed at redhat ES?
Redhat ES 4 and CentOS
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 9, 2008
I am currently trying to sort some issues with a Redhat ES 4 (RHEL4) server and wondering whether CentOS could be the solution to our problem.
For various historical reasons, most to do with cash, it was decided to leave our RHEL4 as was when the years subscription to RHN ran out. Up until now this has not caused any problems.
Recently out hardware guys have required that we put HP System Insight onto the Linux server - however on trying to install the software I am told that it needs the following:
kernel source (can't remember version)
We have rpms for rpm-build and rpm-devel, but for earlier an earlier version of rpm than is installed. The same is true for the Kernel source.
One option is to renew with RHN and get up-to-date. A second option is to change the servers to Windows (the HW guys preference). I was wondering if CentOS is a third option?
Can I download rpms (or install yum - as suggested here:
Serial Numbers for SAS drives in RedHat ES 4.0 & 5.1
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 25, 2008
I've got a bit of a problem - I have to inventory a number of IBM HS21 RedHat Linux ES 4.0 and 5.1 servers and I have to get the Physical Hard Disk serial numbers.
Before anyone jumps down my throat and shouts "Hey, Stupid, you haven't been searching properly, use /sbin/hdparm -i /dev/hda1", there are a couple of curve balls - The drives are SAS drives. The drives have been hardware mirrored and then then split into two partitions - sda1 and sda2. Hdparm just outputs that the device path and that is it.
Does anyone know how to get the Physical Serial number for both drives?
Any help would be gratefully received.
Backup redhat ES 3.6 using netbackup
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 4, 2010
we have an old redhat ES version 3.6 server .we would like to back it up using veritas netbackup version 7.0 . unfortunatly this version of redhat is not supported by symantec . I will have to find another way to backup this server . I was thinking of doing a rysnc and move the data to a another server and back that server up. I am not sure if this will work as the newer version of rhel uses ext2 and ext3 Filesystem and not sure if this is compatible with the rhel version 3 filesystems. Any thoughts and other ideas are appreciated.
Redhat vs Clone (CentOS)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 2, 2005
How close exactly is CentOS to RHEL? I noticed on their site they say they alter some packages? I've read it's the same thing with just the RH's trademark symbols removed. How true is that statement?
Are package updates made available for RHEL also released for CentOS? Do they have to be modified by CentOS developers so they will install? I ask because we are dealing with a hardware company which only officially support RH for their drivers, I'm wondering if the same rpm file made for RHEL would install on CentOS.
I work for a small company and we are currently using Fedora in house. We were considering upgrading to RHEL but prefer a free OS as we'd still be using Windows if we wanted to pay. I'm reluctant to recommend CentOS as it's not very well known and no one knows if it'll be around in a year or two. I'd be fine playing around with it on my own but for business use, would you guys recommend it? Stability and long term use are my main concerns. Thanks for any opinions.
