RedHat GRUB Editor Question (no password)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 14, 2006
So I don't want to make an excessively long post, especially considering this is my first. The issue is fairly simple, I have an IBM server that is setup as dual boot, W2k3 Advanced server, and Redhat. It boots to the GRUB, and the default OS is Linux. The developers who setup RH on this machine are gone now, taking with them the passwords to get in (doh!).
So in short, this server needs to go out for a demo to a client like ASAP, but part of the demo requires a reboot, and I would like to have the default OS remain W2k3 Server.
Is this possible without reinstalling RH? I tried to use the GRUB editor, but whenever I tried to do the configfile command, it just said "unable to mount volume".
I'm lost. Thanks a lot for your help.
Fedora redhat linux, no gui at start up
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 11, 2011
I installed fedora12 redhat linux on my desktop with install DVD. When the install was complete I clicked ok to reboot. When it rebooted it came up with a black screen asking for a localhost login and password. The only thing the install asked for during the set up was a root password. I typed in root for the localhost login and root password and takes me to the command line as root. Will not start the GUI at start up. Am I missing something? please help!
P.S. I tried startx in the command line and it says bad command.
Problems starting runlevel 3 , redhat 7.3, "no more processes left in this runlevel"
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 25, 2009
Hi All ! Thanks to stop by my thread !
I am going to get completely crazy with this error, I have read so many useful threads on the internet about similar problems but none of them solved my issue.
I have several servers with redhat 7.3. There was a power shortage during my holiday and when I came back, all but one servers were running fine.
This one server with the problem does not start properly at runlevel3 (which is the only runlevel I care about, we are not running level 5).
Here are the messages we get:

Many thanks to this forum to put all this together from various sources.

No RedHat update anymore
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 4, 2004
Background: I am using RedHat 8 on my server. As you all might know, the automatic RedHat update is no longer provided to RedHat 8-9 user.I am concerning that some of the software is getting older and in need of upgrade. However,I have some questions regarding upgrade...
1.If I found a software (e.g. PHP) after I searched the web,but it is for RedHat 9.Can I download and use it on my server(RedHat 8)?
2.Kernel problem. I acknowledged that my kernel is pretty old.If I want to upgrade,is there any risk after I installed it?
3.Final question but maybe stupid question: Will my old setting in the software remain the same after I upgraded this software?
Any suggestions are appreciated!
I messed up setting up a ufw firewall on Ubuntu and can no longer log in to my server [closed]
- date: January 1, 1970
Alright, so I'm not great (or even good) with servers, but have recently been put in charge of the task of setting them up. I have an application sitting on a VPS, here are the specs that may matter for this question...
So I was setting up my first firewall and was using UFW. I accidentally only opened up ports 80 and 443 (I was confused about setting up an SSL cert (also a new task)) and got logged out of the server. My ssh is set to try port 22 and so when I try to ssh in, it won't let me, I get this error --
ssh: connect to host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 22: Operation timed out
So I tried to ssh in on one of the open ports by running this command --
ssh [email protected]
and received this error --
ssh: connect to host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 443: Connection refused
The same thing happened for trying port 80.
What do I do? I already have a live and very active application on this server. I need to be able to login and reopen port 22 for ssh
Permanent fix to tail: cannot watch `log/development.log': No space left on device
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
I've been using Ubuntu 11.10 for a little over a week now. But after some time I encountered this error(the one in the title) when Im trying to access the log in my RoR project. I found a fix which is by pasting this in the terminal:
sudo sysctl -w fs.inotify.max_user_watches=16384
The problem is I have to do this again and again everyday. Does anyone know how I can execute this at startup? Or does anyone know any permanent solution? thanks much!!!
Ubuntu 14.04 freezing (fully) randomly
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 4, 2015
Probably this question has been asked many times, but have this problem that Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity freezes randomly on my HP Probook 4540s (Intel and AMD graphics) laptop. Wheter it's when using browser or doing something else. And sometimes it happens like 10 seconds after waking up from suspend mode. And when it freezes, it freezes completely, mouse doesn't move, no reacton from keyboard, nothing. I have tried that REISUB thing many times - nothing. So I have to reset it by power button. But this freezing isn't happening on Xubuntu, which I'm right now using. So it might have to do something with Unity? Would upgrading to 14.10 solve the issue?
After waking up from suspend, freezup happens every time. so it's basically inavoidable. So it looks like the only way to prevent it from freezing after wake up would be to turn off computer, and not leting it suspend itself or do it manually.
But random freezing can happen still happen too.

Xampp Apache Shuts Down Unexpectedly, Empty Log File And No Events
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 14, 2014
I have XAMPP installed on my machine. I am trying to run Apache from the XAMPP Control Panel.
I start the XAMPP Control Panel by right-clicking the shortcut and selecting "Run as administrator" (I am logged in on an account with Administrator privileges). The Control Panel starts up and everything appears to be in order (no error messages/warnings).
When I click the Start button next to Apache I get the following error message:
