Ubuntu desktop refused connection to a TightVNC while laptop is granted
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 12, 2011
A very peculiar situation: my Ubuntu desktop (10.04) is refused when trying to connect for Remote Desktop viewing to a WinXP machine while an Ubuntu laptop (10.10) is granted connection although all three are on the same network, both physically and by IP.
Router is a NetGear wired/wireless and WinXP and Ubuntu desktop are connected to it by cables. Ubuntu laptop connects to it via wireless.
WinXP runs TightVNC in order to enable remote desktop viewing from non- win machines. Rules assigned to TightVNC incorporate the range of addresses on my private network given by the router. There is already an exception in Win's firewall to allow TightVNC's port to be open.
When I try to remotely view Win's desktop from my laptop, I am allowed in and can see and work on the desktop of WinXP with no problem. But when I try the same thing from my Ubuntu desktop it says "connection closed".
I have checked all three machines for their IP addresses and they are all in the same network with sa

External usb refused connection with error 62
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 9, 2008
OK, I'm still working on getting this external USB problem fixed. Both of these disks have connected before installing VirtualBox; I don't know if there is a connection. I am using an HP Pavilion dv7 with Intrepid, VirtualBox installed with a Windows XP guest.
I have run an lsusb before and after connection, and done a dmesg | egrep usb to get data about the connection. This may be found here:
As is plain, the connection kicks out with an error -62. What's an error -62? How do we look it up? And how can I correct it? At this point, I can't even get to see it to reformat (and I would hate to).
Thanks to all who can help.
refused connection on port 143 iptables are open
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 2, 2010
I am configuring an internal only IMAP server for archival emails. I am absolutely baffled why my connection is being refused. UFW is disabled and IPTABLES has a rule to allow all connections on 143 and 993. When I telnet this response is given:
telnet localhost 143
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
Even nmap shows the port closed. Here is my iptables rule:
-A ufw-user-input -p udp -m udp --dport 143 -j ACCEPT

VNC desktop sharing cross platfrom and from different desktop types
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 8, 2013
I'm intending to set up a server of sorts complete with a desktop set up, probably LXDE.
My main machine will be running a KDE desktop so I wonder if I can use VNC from that to drive the LXDE desktop on the "server".
Going a little further I also wonder if the desktop on the server could be run from a netbook currently running windows. I am likely to change that to Linux at some point but may find that it doesn't work out.
Why - well I am much happier even editing files from a desktop environment. May also try streaming video out of the "server" so netbook driving remotely would be an attractive way of doing it. Even my wife could manage that.
Not sure which part of the forum would be best for asking about something like this.
Super Slow Desktop Sharing
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 16, 2012
This is the sharing server running on my desktop, but when I access the desktop from a remote machine (client is Ubuntu, Windows with UVNC), refrash rate is VERY slow.
However when I shared my Linux Mint desktop, it's not as slow as Ubuntu.
Do you know any solution for this problem?

Desktop Sharing between Fedora 17 & openSUSE 12.1
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 8, 2012
Could someone walk me through how to configure DesktopSharing/Remote Access in Fedora 17? I saw the application for it but their documentation didn't say a whole lot about it.
The computer to be accessed would be my desktop running Fedora 17, and the computer to access it would be my laptop running openSUSE 12.1. I believe SSH would be necessary, as I would have to access it from outside my local network from school where internet restriction are abundant. I AM NOT DOING THIS TO HACK. I just want to be able to access my desktop remotely.
Thanks in advance for any help I get
