Samba upgrade causes authentication failure
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 10, 2012
From 3.0.10 (very old) to 3.6.3 (local build). Client is Windows 7.
With 3.0.10, it works fine.
With 3.6.3, client gets a popup asking for authentication and the server logs shows:
setup_new_vc_session: New VC == 0, if NT4.x compatible we would close all old resources.
libads/kerberos_verify.c:370: failed to fetch machine password
Failed to verify incoming ticket with error NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE!
3.6.3 tgz does not come with a smb.conf so I reuse the existing one.
I also pointed nmb to use the same file. Should it use a configuration file of its own?
The machine runs FC1. I am just trying to keep it stay afloat till the budget is approved for the new server. But audit requires an upgrade since it's way too old.
Samba upgrade on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 31, 2010
Domain controller - Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, Samba 3.0.28a, LDAP
File Server - Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, Samba 3.0.28a. A lot of user shares.
Workstations - WinXP, on startup %u.bat files map network drives from File server.
Right now we have a couple of new PC's with Win7 and OpenSuSE 11.2. None of them can join
Tryed to upgrade samba servers to 3.4.5 using source code. On domain controller everything works, but on file server i can not access any of shares after upgrade.
Can anyone explain where is that difference between samba 3.0.28a and samba 3.4.5?!
Had to downgrade because of this problem.

Chage / SSH Authentication Failure
- date: August 15, 2011
Let me say that I am Linux amateur as best. So, there may be part of this question that don't make sense.
I am using a RHEL (5.6) server that has several accounts used by external devices. During a recent password change for these devices, the chage -d0 command was used to expire the pw. Afterward, a user would then, on behalf of the device, SSH into localhost and choose a new password. Unfortunately, when the user tried to SSH [email protected]
, he received an authentication error and never received the prompts for changing the password.
As a test, I created a dummy account, chage -d0 the password and then ssh [email protected]
and everything worked as expected.
With my limited Linux exposure, I am pretty much scratching my head. Anyone have any ideas, or encounter this with 5.6?
NX Server Authentication Failure

I just installed nomachine NX on my ubuntu server, and unfortunately it fails to authenticate.
The problem is, these lines from the syslog:

[SOLVED] Backup with rsnapshot and ssh has passphraseless public key authentication failure
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 6, 2012
I am trying to setup rsnapshot to take backups of a remote server using public key authentication without passphrase and as root user. I think the public key authentication fails as I am asked for the root user password when I run "rsnapshot hourly" .
Here is the console output,
Samba not showing authentication errors, no matter what log level
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 22, 2011
I changed the password on my samba server and now I cannot mount the share anymore from my Windows 7 box.
The logs shows no errors whatsoever about authentication, is that normal? I remember from a long time ago that I never saw samba do that and it has made troubleshooting very difficult.
I changed the password with the
smbpasswd wanuser command
the samba version is 3.2.5
here my samba.cfg file
server string = asdfadf
log file = /var/log/samba/%m
panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d
invalid users = root
log level = 2
comment = wanuser
path = /home/wanuser
valid users = wanuser
read only = No
When I crank up the log level, samba shows lots and lots of totally irrelevant messages like connected and disconnected, but not why it got disconnected. On the Windows 7 machine, I get an error that the user and password is not correct. Why does Samba not report it?
PAM authentication failure
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 16, 2008
My PAM module seems to work right but it fails in authentication. Althought it can't authenticate, the session module works and the software who uses it executes well.
For example, when I login through "gdm" using pam to authenticate against an ldap server
pam_unix(gdm:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost= user=myuser
pam_unix(gdm:session): session opened for user myuser by (uid=0)
