how to flush DNS cache in 16.04.1
/etc/hosts is currently
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
will this work?
sudo apt-get install nscd
sudo /etc/init.d/nscd restart
EDIT I did the above and /etc/hosts remained the same. Is that correct? Thanks!
How does one reload the /etc/hosts (clear cache?) after adding a domain to 127.0.0.1
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 28, 2011
I often manually add a troublesome domain (e.g., advertisements, fake virus alerts, etc.) to my /etc/hosts file on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid; but the effect isn't immediate.
My hosts file is already fifteen thousand lines long (having combined all the hosts files I could find on the net, including the MVP one); but I still, almost daily, find a new irritant to add to my /etc/hosts file.
My problem is I do not understand WHEN the /etc/hosts file is next read after a change.
I've been rebooting to make sure the hosts is re-read; but there must be a simpler way.
- WHEN is the /etc/hosts file reconsidered in Ubuntu?
- Is there a way to have the /etc/hosts file re-read sooner?

Moving from CentOS 5.7 to Ubuntu 10.04 for LAMP, DNS, Murmur, Minecraft server
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 30, 2011
I've been using CentOS 5.X as a LAMP server for a few years now. I've been considering switching to Ubuntu 10.04 because it seems to have more packages that I use than CentOS does.
I'm at the stage where everything I know about running the server is from writing down things I've learned from scouring the net when a problem comes up.
I've done things like enable test repos and built programs from source to get things running (like murmur and ICE) when I know ubuntu already has packages available.
I've been wondering how much of a security or stability risk my CentOS server is now. For this reason I've been thinking the smart thing to do may be to swap to using Ubuntu and just learn the differences between the two OS's.
I'd like to know what others' opinions are on this.
[SOLVED] How to edit Firefox global settings on Edubuntu LTSP server
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 20, 2011
I recently did a clean install of Edubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) with LTSP. After installing, I found that Firefox was on version 5. I've done customizations to Firefox in 3.6.x (proxy settings, etc) on other LTSP servers (Ubuntu 9.10) and have always used the firefox.js file located in /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.x/defaults/pref. When I looked, it doesn't exist in this directory. There is a syspref.js and I've added lines to that, but it doesn't seem to pull from that file. Is there a js file somewhere that I can use to set global changes to Firefox for all users on LTSP? I'm looking to set things like proxy settings, cache directories and sizes, etc....Any help is appreciated!
How to expand the drive space in ubuntu server 12.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 16, 2012
Hi, recently i downloaded the ubuntu 12.04 server and installed it on a hyper v VM. I allocated 20 GB for the virtual machine and started installtion, during the installtion it asked for amount of hardrive space to be allocated and i gave 50%, just thought later we could expand it, but now when i tried to see the disk space it only shows only the details of the allocated disk space but not the other 10 gb free space.
Here is the link to the screenshot
Please suggest a way to increase the disk space by allocating the other 10 gb to the disk.

How to find my Apache version on Ubuntu server
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 21, 2009
This is a newbie question but I've searched for like 1 hour, and most online resources point to
But! that command just does not work on my Ubuntu server. In fact, I can not even find a service with such name; it looks like such command works on Red Hat or other distros, not Ubuntu. How do I suppose to find the Apache version?
Just playing around I was able to get the information doing this by myself
/usr/sbin/apache2ctl status | grep Version
but that's kind of a workaround I guess, more than a real command...
BTW, mine is 2.2.11

How to securely share files over the internet from Ubuntu Server 12.04 to Windows 7?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 5, 2013
I'm really lost, I thought it would be really easy to be able to safely share files that are stored on my server over the internet, so that I can access them from anywhere. But it turns out it's almost impossible! I've tried OpenVPN multiple times, Openswan and even ownCloud, but I couldn't get them to work (except for ownCloud, but I disliked it). Am I missing something? Do any of you know an easy way to share files securely over the internet?
This is what I want:
- To be able to access my files through Windows Explorer (i.e. be able to map the shared folder as a network drive in Windows)
- To be able to open the files directly, without having to download them first (as is the case with a FTP-server), so I can stream my music files
- An encrypted connection, so noboby can intercept the data I am sending to and receiving from the server
This is what I have:
- A fast internet connection (100mbit)
- A Ubuntu 12.04LTS Server
- Two laptops running Windows 7 - t
