Ubuntu Server Software Raid 5 How does the system boot if one drive goes down?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 18, 2014
I am thinking of doing a raid 5 on an ubuntu server 14.04 system with 3 x 3TB drives and have a few questions...
1. How would the system boot if one of the drives goes down?
2. Is the boot loader installed on each drive?
3. If I pulled out a drive and put in a new drive, would it auto-rebuild or do I need hardware raid for that feature?
[Help] Problem Server DNS and Hostnames
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 5, 2012
Hello friends, sorry for my poor English. I come from a long-standing problem I can not solve, and I need your help .. I have a server with Bind DNS with Zentyal administer it. The problem I came for a while, is that when configuring a Samba + LDAP client I can login from other servers by IP but not by hostname. For example if the server is called "ServidorITS" and your IP is "192.168.0.33" I can access its IP, but I can access the full name: ServidorITS.midominio.com but not by hostname. Even when I do an nslookup IP to me works ok, but when I do it tells me NXDOMAIN Hostname. Someone can give me a hand? It's really appreciate it!

Minime server with IPtables forwarding. How to block www by host or IP?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 17, 2008
Hola Boys and Girls.
I have a tiny problem. Its not really a problem but something that bothers me a lot. I have a laptop. Old IBM Thinkpad 600E which runs PCLinuxOS 2008 MiniMe with Nokia N73 setup as modem and dialed by kppp. I have a USB wifi card in it as well and I am sharing the internet connection to my 4 other ad-hoc wifi network laptops. 1 of them is Windows 2000 3 others are MiniMe as well. This is done by the iptables. I have wrote and using 2 little scripts that are doing it for me.
kppp -c 3G
/sbin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
/sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -i ppp0 -o rausb0 -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
/sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -i rausb0 -o ppp0 -j ACCEPT
I have placed it into /home/hagrid/.kde/Autostart and it really works great.
If kppp disconnects for any reason the laptop reboots itself connects and continues sharing again.
IPs are static and DNS as well.
My question is
Server exposed to internet how safe?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 9, 2010
My router REALLY doesn't like port forwarding. Using a dynamic DNS service I can log into the router, but can't access an SSH server I left running attached. If I was to put the server in the DMZ, with no hardware firewall whatsoever, how long before I'm hacked?
The server (the 'music PC' in my sig) is running Fedora 12 LXDE spin, and running an SSH server and VNC server, as well as LDAAP and NFS for local stuff (although it might be accessible over the internet).

FTP Server Up and running... how do I hide ftp users from local login screen?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 17, 2005
Hi all, I just got ProFTPD running.
After I created a few user accounts for my ftp server, I was surprised to see them show up on my main login screen (the graphical login screen which appears when you start mandrake).
Is there a way to hide them from that screen?
Ubuntu server 10.04 LTS How to install RVM?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: February 16, 2013
These are the steps I have taken to install RVM:
Installing Ruby: sudo apt-get install curl git-core ruby the which ruby command works
curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --ruby --rails --trace
My user is "loam" in the /home/loam/.bashrc I have added this to the last line of the file.
if [[ -s $HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm ]] ; then source $HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm ; fi
And replaced [ -z "$PS1" ] && return with if [[ -n "$PS1" ]]; then
When the RVM script was done I got the message:
* To start using RVM you need to run `source /home/loam/.rvm/scripts/rvm`
in all your open shell windows, in rare cases you need to reopen all shell windows.
And I did try it and got:
$ source /home/loam/.rvm/scripts/rvm
-sh: source: not found
Which rvm is blank.. I can see there is a .rvm folder in /home/loam
If I write:
-sh: /home/loam: Permission denied
I have also tried the Single-User Install Location: ~/.rvm/.. And stil which rvm is bla
My server has been hacked, how to remove SUCKIT?
- date: May 16, 2004
Hi guys, my server has been hacked and installed SUCKIT rootkit.
When i tried to reboot my server using; shutdown -r now i got following errors.
The system is going down for reboot NOW!
RK_Init: idt=0xc033e000, sct=0xc033ec40, kmalloc()=0xc0139df0, gfp=0x3
Z_Init: Allocating kernel-code memory...Done, 12836 bytes, base=0xfffffff2
BD_Init: Starting backdoor daemon...Done, pid=31175
Then i searched little bit and found this is a SUCKIT issue. I found SUCKIT rootkit on /dev/sdhu0/tehdrakg directory. And here is the files on it:
