Hi, I have dual boot with Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. Today, after using Partition Wizard on Windows to resize its partition, I got the following message when reboot:
[SOLVED] grub rescue: "error: unknown filesystem" when booting Windows XP / Ubuntu dual boot
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 31, 2011
Hello all, I've got an Asus Eee which came with Windows XP. I created a partition (in Windows), then installed Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition using their Windows Installer. When I restarted, I was able to choose which system to boot, and booted Ubuntu. After some time, I needed to restart to update Firefox.
When I did so, I got a screen reading
error: unknown filesystem, grub rescue prompt

I've been using Ubuntu quite a while now. I was finding myself running out of space on my Ubuntu partition but having much too much available for the windows that I hardly ever use. Most of that space is pictures, music and iso's. Also, when I did what I believe is called a clean upgrade to natty, I didn't choose to do the partitioning myself. It used the existing Ubuntu partition as I planned but it created another swap partition.
So I needed to reconfigure my partitions. See the first screenshot. I had the Toshiba system volume, win 7, the Toshiba provided recovery that was useless as it would have recovered vista, and my extended partition as primary partitions. I had Ubuntu, 2 swaps and a real small un-allocated space for some reason. I deleted the recovery partition, sda3. I deleted both swaps in the extended partition, sda 5 and 7. I shrunk win 7. I expanded the extended partition, sda4. By the way, you can try and try to shrink win 7 using windows and never get very far. You

I have Win XP and Ubuntu 10.04 dual boot.
I was trying to uninstall Ubuntu. Instead I removed the partition and the result is:
error: unknown filesystem
I tried to boot from a 10.04 and 10.10 Ubuntu CD and I get the same error message.
[SOLVED] Grub error: unknown filesystem after installation

I have an old computer.
(CPU: P II 233 MHz, RAM: 512 MB, DDR2, HDD: 40 GB)
I was installed Debian 6.0 sqeeze without graphical interface successfully. This is the ONLY operating system on the computer.
After reboot I have this message:
[SOLVED] error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue>

error: unknown filesystem
My apologies for having to post, but after reading Similar Threads, and a few help tutorials, I just don't understand enough about the problem to correct it.
Background: My mother's HP laptop had Ubuntu and Vista on it, Ubuntu my brother's doing. He decided he wanted to take off Ubuntu yesterday (he had forgotten the password), and deleted the partition that it was contained within. The computer now boots to this error.
Inventory: We no longer have the install disk for Windows Vista, he cannot tell me what version he used of Ubuntu, what partition it was on, any of the specs for the machine, or generally any information about the system. All I am aware of is that error on the boot-up screen. I have nothing else to work with.
I would like to remove Grub, and Ubuntu, and leave Windows intact (the request of the owner of the computer), but I have no idea what commands I could use to get rid of either when I can't access Windows, or ho

error: unknown command 'drivemap'. error: invalid EFI file path
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 19, 2013
My girlfriend purchased an Asus UX31a Zenbook with Windows 7 preinstalled. I talked her into trying Ubuntu 12.04 but now I cannot boot from the recovery partition anymore (Windows 7 recovery). Whenever I try to start from the Windows partition I get the following error "error: unknown command 'drivemap'. error: invalid EFI file path". I tried several solutions suggested on the Web but nothing worked (including trying to repair grub).
My only goal is to boot from the recovery partition to have Windows 7 installed again (I don't intend to use Ubuntu and Windows 7). Has anybody an idea how to do that? I can mount the recovery partition, if this is of any help? Can I just copy the entire recovery partition on an external harddrive and then boot from it?
Thank you for your help!
