cannot reach hosts that are inside a conditional forward dns zone
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 26, 2009
On our network we have a windows 2003 DNS server with some zones that are conditional forwarded to the customers dns servers.
I have no problems at all with other operating systems like windows, centos, freebsd, openbsd or OS X except ubuntu.
With ubuntu i am not able to reach any host that is inside the zone that is forwarded to the other dns server.
Anyone have a solution for this ?
SHorewall dynamic zone problem not compiling
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 26, 2011
I'm trying to configure in shorewall dynamic zone on outside interface for IPSEC vpn users (Racoon + Shrew VPN Client) as most reliable and correct way to set access restrictions on vpn users network access. VPN itself working like a charm.
Have made config similar to http://www.shorewall.net/Dynamic.html examples, but it won't compile with "ppp0 is not a defined bridge" error.
ipset module and utilities compiled, installed, loaded as described in http://pepoluan.posterous.com/powert...pset-on-ubuntu post.
What is wrong with config or shorewall instance?
OS: Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS.
$ sudo dpkg -l | grep -E '(shorewall|linux-kernel|racoon|iptables)'
ii iptables 1.4.4-2ubuntu2 administration tools for packet filtering and NAT

shorewall adding a router in the local zone
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 4, 2006
I have a two-interface shorewall config that is working fine.
My local network has grown and I need to add a router inside the local zone. It would be easy to add another nic to the firewall - but I can't do this. I must add a router inside the local zone and have the firewall route to the new subnet via the new router.
The "multiple-zones" howto says I can do this by telling shorewall to "add a route to the new subned via the router and restarting shorewall"... alas - for the life of me I cannot find anywhere that describes how to add a static route in a shorewall config!!
In essence, this is a similar problem to adding a NATing wireless router onto a home network. (because this also adds a new subnet onto the local zone). This must have been solved many times in the past.
Can anybody help explain to me?
Which Virtual S/W for Ubuntu Any Solaris 10 Zone Experts?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 9, 2009
This question is for the Solaris 10 zone/container guru's.
Looking for virtual s/w for Ubuntu:
My job that puts the peanut-butter in my fridge has me knee deep, daily, in Solaris Zones. Literally I manage 100's of them, so I'm pretty well versed in MANY aspects of those, pools, resource mgmt, detaching, attaching, ZFS'ed, etc... Done pretty much all of it.
Q: Is there anyone else in my [Solaris 10] shoes that has used x86_64 bit Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS Server with LXC, OpenVZ and/or VirtualBox in some cases, or any other virtualizing S/W I did not list?
Not too interested in Xen, seems overkill for what I want to do at home anyway.
Probably, max 3 or 4 zones would be needed.
Which is more stable? Which is easy(ier) to compile without the [dependency depression loop]? Any good, ready made 64 bit binaries/pkgs?
[SOLVED] /etc/hosts file is readonly for root in ubuntu Server. But rw is for root
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 13, 2012
In my Ubuntu server 10 64bit, /etc/hosts file is read only. Rights of /etc/hosts are
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 392 2012-03-09 09:55 hosts. But i am unable to edit the file. I do not have gui installed in it. /etc/resolv.conf is editable, but /etc/hosts file alone is not editable. This machine is in OPSource Cloud.
I have logged in as root user only. Kindly help

if I need to change the hostname of a machine...i"m assuming I change the entry in /etc/hosts. Is there any other file I need to alter?
