AndroidUbuntu compatibility Tablet v. Notebook v. Netbook
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 17, 2013
I am an avid Ubuntu user. I have a laptop and a desktop that are powered by this particular distro. But now I am looking for a light-weight device to help me with my work. Carrying a full-fledged laptop with me all the time is no longer an option and I want to avoid it at all costs. So I have been thinking of getting either an ultra light notebook, a netbook, or a tablet.
It seems that the rise of tablet computers has put the production of netbooks to an end. So I am wondering from a Linux perspective which of these devices are more powerful and more capable of doing the type of work I would need them to do. And which of these devices is more Linux friendly? My work involves dealing constantly with the open source word processor, open source power point presentation and spread sheet, various photo images, pdf files, and internet browsing.
So I guess I would like to know (1) whether a tablet, a netbook, or alternatively an ultra light notebook would be a good choice for

Install on Google Chrome OS Cr48 Notebook
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 28, 2010
I have one of the Google Chrome OS Cr-48 laptops and I have read that people are able to install Ubuntu along side of it (dual-boot).
I am tempted, but wonder if anybody else here has done it or are thinking of it so as to get some back-and-forth on pitfalls, methods and experiences.
Like whether or not all components work out of the box (wireless better, there are no NICs installed, but what about video, Verizon 3G, 1-second boot, battery life, etc.?) I read it has a 16 GB SSD drive, which limits what you can do with it. I always prefer to attempt something like this if I know I can "roll-back" or restore the system to the original configuration.
That isn't to say the Chrome OS sucks, because it doesn't. Yet it is different than a typical laptop or desktop in that just about everything has to be online and unlike Jolicloud, local applications are not available beyond a Chrome extension.
notebook keeps freezing after resume kubuntu 12.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 15, 2013
Dear forum man (I'm in good mood today, sry),
kubuntu 12.04, all up to date, keeps freezing after resume since instalattion, a long time ago.
I'm new to ubuntu, former slackware user, so I dont know yet how to fix things here.
The machine is a asus core i5 notebook, model k45A. Its a good machine.
But sometimes (not every time), when I open the lid and the system is supposed to resume, I get a hard crash to a terminal screen, where only hard reset is possible.
Its very annoying, please help me to fix it.
I am failing to install ubuntu 10.04 desktop on ASUS notebook M5200N
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 14, 2011
Hello everyone:
I got a second hand notebook from my manager, which is in good shape, for free. It is an ASUS notebook M5200N, Pentium M 1600 MHz - 504 MB RAM and almost 35 GB HD.
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Desktop on it.
I start the installation, see the ubuntu logo but after a few minutes it gets stuck with a blank page and doesn't continue. I have repeated the process several times so far but always get the same result.
Currently I have installed latest Debian desktop version on it, but I would like to install ubuntu 10.04.
Since I need it for my school Lab work. I am using a VirtualBox at school to do Lab work of ubuntu in class, but I'd like to install it on my notebook, so I can take my notebook there instead.
I appreciate some help figuring out why I can't install ubuntu on it. I already read all the similar posts about notebooks and ubuntu on this forum, didn't help me.
Regards,
Mansour
Dnscryptproxy how to install on ubuntu desktop in a simple way
location: linux.com - date: April 12, 2013
how to install dnscrypt-proxy-1.2.0.tar.bz2 on ubuntu desktop
and what about (dnscrypt-proxy-1.2.0.tar.bz2.sig) is it also needed to complete the installation of the .bz2 and how to deal with it?
(http://download.dnscrypt.org/dnscrypt-proxy/)
clearly detailed answer as I'm new to linux. even the explanation on this link is not clear to me https://github.com/opendns/dnscrypt-proxy
where should I download it? on desktop or on home? and how to extract it and install it?. Also is there a ready to install .deb package?. because I have converted the above mentioned bz2 to .deb but it did not install properly and it is wrapped up with a lock.
It will be installed on:
Ubuntu 12.10 Desktop
Intel® Core™ i3 CPU M 330 @ 2.13GHz × 4
OS type 32-bit
Thanks

[SOLVED] Simple Java loop runs 6 times slower on Ubuntu 11.10 than Windows Vista
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 2, 2012
I'm running this loop on windows and ubuntu:
while (System.currentTimeMillis() - start < 5000) {
longVariable = (longVariable * 2) / 3;
longVariable = (longVariable * 3) / 2;
longVariable += minisculeAmount;
counter++;
}
The problem is my loop counter gets to 6 to 10 times higher on Windows than Ubuntu... I have tried setting the nice level of the process to -19 using
sudo nice --19 java -jar jarfile
...but this seems to have no effect on the results. I would by the way expect my screen to lock up when a -19 process to run but the system remains responsive, which is a bit of a surprise. I have only been using linux for a few days so I am probably missing some fundamental gotcha.
