location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 5, 2009
i'm using SMPlayer version 0.6.0rc2 on ubuntu hardy and it's working well especially for real media files.
i was wondering if it's worth upgrading to 0.6.6, and if the upgrade is smooth and stable.
thanks in advance for any suggestion.
[SOLVED] Xubuntu/Ubuntu not booting after kernel update

Edit - Actually, my mistake, simply a blank USB stick in there that meant it was trying to boot from that rather than from the HDD.

Welcome to this year's 37th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! With many of the major distributions in the final stages of their development work, this is possibly the most exciting period of the year. It shouldn't be long before the new versions from Slackware and Mandriva are released, with Fedora, openSUSE and Debian following shortly. Mandriva Linux 2007 is now starting to look really good, while Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 "etch" is shaping up to be a real breakthrough for the largest Linux distribution project. Fedora Core is also getting a complete makeover - at least in the look and feel department. This issue is devoted to all the upcoming new releases, with further news covering the availability of KDE 4 packages for Kubuntu, a new major version of GParted LiveCD, and an interesting interview with the developers of PC-BSD. In our latest book review, we'll take a quick look at Ubuntu Linux For Non-Geeks by Rickfort Grant. Happy reading!

Ubuntu update problem
location: linux.com - date: May 8, 2012
I recently updated to 12.04, but now whenever I turn my computer on it goes into just that blank darkish purple screen right before the actual desktop appears and stays there. It will make a noise indicating that I need to login with my password but it is still bank. So I tried typinh my password in anyway, but it's still doing nothing. The only way I can use Ubuntu is to go through "recovery mode".
"Your system is running in lowgraphics mode'' after Ubuntu 12.04 LTS update
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 29, 2012
I own a Acer Aspire 5552 laptop, which has Ubuntu on it. And now i updated it to 12.04 LTS from 11.10. When i turn the laptop on, it says : Your system is running in low-graphics mode, Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.
I read about this on Ask Ubuntu already, and it suggested to got to Ctrl + Alt + F1 and reinstall my desktop, or install fglrx. Well, these things what I read on this site : http://askubuntu.com/questions/12545...0-graphics-car
Both of them don't work. And if I don't enter Terminal and just click OK (press Enter, because the mouse cursor isn't there) when it says you system is running in low-..., I get options, but i can't choose any of them, can't even click cancel or OK. My graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. Help please! Thanks
AMD Radeon HD 5xxx / 6xxx unsupported after 13.04 update
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 26, 2013
Hello. After updating to version 13.04, I started to get an annoying AMD unsupported hardware watermark on the corner of my screen (right, bottom). So I started to investigate what could have gone wrong...I have a AMD A4 CPU and a AMD Radeon HD 6480G. When I go to "Programs and updates" --> "Additional drivers", it says it's running a proprietary driver (fglrx-updates). If I check the fglrx box or the xorg box, the watermark does not go away.
I ran the Catalyst GUI and it says that version 12.9 is currently installed. According to the AMD website, the newest version of Catalyst for my CPU is 13.4. Ubuntu repositories only offer fglrx and fglrx-updates on the 12.9 version (BTW, what is the difference between those two drivers?!)
Does anyone have any idea on how to solve this issue? Should I be concerned at all with this watermark warning? I'm not experiencing video problems that I am aware of. Can I at least make this watermark go away?

Update to Mountain Lion

Hi guys, what are you experience updating OSX to Mountain Lion for dual booted setups? I've got a dual booted iMac with 12.04 and osx 10.6. I went thru quite some pain to get it up running, and I wonder if ML is worth the hazzle.

I use Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I always update the OS as frequent as possible. Today, I've accepted kernel update, which happened last time about a month ago. Everything is OK, but I have 6 Ubuntu boot options in GRUB, 2 for each kernel (Standard and recovery mode).
Does it mean that all these 3 kernels are installed on my system?
If it's so, do I need to remove previous ones, since this last one is working correctly?
And if I should do so, how should I do that?
Thanks so much.
Xubuntu software update stays on, then says system up to date after doing nothing.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 6, 2013
For the last 3 or 4 days my software update notifier has been on and when I click it, it says there are 35 updates available. I tried running the update and after a minute or so it comes back and says system is up to date. However, the notifier is still there and it still says there are 35 updates available. I don't think its updating anything. Does anybody know what would be causing this?
