SMTP authentication error: SASL authentication failure: Password verification failed
location: linuxexchange.com - date: August 28, 2014
I have a VPS server which is running postfix + dovecot as mail server.
I have already created two accounts which work well. Both can send and receive email via STARTTLS and SSL.
But when I added a third account today, it can only receive email but failed to connect SMTP server. So it is not a issue of wrong password. The SMTP settings are same as the other two accounts. The settings of client should be correct.
The postfix log says:
Aug 28 12:55:32 server postfix/smtpd: warning: SASL authentication failure: Password verification failed
Aug 28 12:55:32 server postfix/smtpd: warning: unknown[22.214.171.124]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed: authentication failure
Aug 28 12:55:35 server postfix/smtpd: warning: unknown[126.96.36.199]: SASL LOGIN authentication failed: authentication failure
The sasl and tls settings in main.cf is:
smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtpd_sasl_type = cyrus
smtpd_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
broken_sasl_auth_clients = yes
Cronjob suddenly stopped working giving Crond Authentication Failure Error.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 28, 2011
I have set up my cron job for Oracle User. It was
working fine. But After changing the cron, it ran
for the first time. Then the next time, it throws
the below error:
crond: Authentication Failure
I tried the following work arounds:
1) Checked the cronjob with other users
2) Restarted the crond service.
3) Cleared all the entries in the Oracle user, and
just tried using a simple touch command to test
4) checked visudo extries also.
After trying out all the above work arounds, iam
unable to run the cronjob.
Thanks in Advance :-)

[SOLVED] SASL Authentication Failure with Mutt
- date: March 25, 2012
I've had zero problems with my regular @gmail.com address with Mutt. This @bucknell.edu address however, will not let me send mail. I get a "SASL Authentication Failure" every time I try. Any ideas? Are my servers set up properly?
The @bucknell.edu address is a google address, only with a different domain name. This login info works for all other clients I've set it up with. I'd really love to get mutt working.
Here's a snippet from my config, with the password and username changed out.
set from = "[email protected]
set imap_user = "[email protected]
set imap_pass = "PWORD"
set folder = "imaps://imap.gmail.com:993"
set smtp_url = "smtp://[email protected]
set smtp_pass = "PWORD"
set spoolfile = "+INBOX"

[SOLVED] Linux Ent 5 only root logging in.not other users logging authentication failure error
- date: September 30, 2014
This is Ravi Kumar from Rajahmundry(AP).working as a hardware engineer in Aditya educational institutions.im very much interested learning linux thats why i installed Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 in vmware 10 and started practicing.i created some users with default home directories and some with other directories
1. step 1 useradd -p 12345 abc
step 2 logout root
step 3 login to abc
displaying "Authencation failure"
2. useradd -d /users/123 123 -p 123
giving error can't create directory /users/123
if i manually create and give 777 to that folder also not loging the user and giving same error "Authentication failure"
Any one give suggestions to me is helpful.my practice has stopped at the begin.
Thanks to all..
Yumex says “Authentication Failure” despite correct password, following large update — Fedora 21
location: linuxexchange.com - date: August 2, 2015
The title says it all, and I'm very confused. I can't find any other potential solutions to this issue... is anyone able to help me troubleshoot? I sure would apppreciate it...
Things I've tried:
Running yum update again..
I was hoping to avoid doing a complete undo of the large update, because that seems like overkill... If I could just see why exactly authentication gets rejected, I feel like I might be able to uninstall one or two things and fix it...
UPDATE: Sorry guys, I'm retarded. I actually just needed to restart... Nothing told me that this would be necessary, so it slipped my mind that it might be. Thanks anyway if I wasted your time by making you think about this question.
