Installing Backtrack5 tools + menu in Ubuntu 10.10
- date: November 17, 2011
I have had some trouble installing Backtrack5 tools and especially the menu in Ubuntu 10.10, so I decided to make a really quick guide for this.
1. Adding the repositories
Start Synaptic Package Manager
go to Settings -> Repositories -> Other Software Sources
Add these to your repository list.
deb http://all.repository.backtrack-linux.org revolution main microverse non-free testing
deb http://32.repository.backtrack-linux.org revolution main microverse non-free testing (only for 32-bit Ubuntu)
deb http://64.repository.backtrack-linux.org revolution main microverse non-free testing (only for 64-bit Ubuntu)
deb http://source.repository.backtrack-linux.org revolution main microverse non-free testing
Uncheck or remove (they are useless anyway) the newly added backtrack source repositories from the list.
Open up a terminal and run
:~$ wget -q http://all.repository.backtrack-linux.org/backtrack.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
:~$ sudo apt-get
[SOLVED] There is no "menu.lst" in my Ubuntu "/boot/grub/" folder.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 30, 2010
I have a problem with my GRUB bootloader. I have Ubuntu 9.10
and Win XP installed on my laptop. But only the list of Ubuntu
appears in the menu and NOT win XP.
Some instructions say try to edit the "menu.lst" file in
But there is no such a file in my /boot/grub/" folder.
What should I do now?
With best regards,
[SOLVED] Lubuntu Install Question REBOOTS after the TRY or INSTALL menu
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 31, 2011
IBM 600X Thinkpad, 328 MB RAM
This laptop is currently running Ubuntu 10.04 just fine....if you count running
I have heard good things about Lubuntu and that it can speed things up, and that it uses pretty much the same installer as Ubuntu. However, just after I select either TRY or INSTALL (it doesn't matter) the screen goes black and the computer reboots.
A fellow on another forum mentioned he has a IBM 600e with only 128 MB RAM running Lubuntu. The 600e is a lessor form of my 600X, both coming out the same year. So, technically, my 600X should have no problems as they are the same machine, I just have more RAM and a higher Mhz.
Does anyone have any ideas what is going wrong? And how I can solve this problem? I can boot Lubuntu liveCD I burned on a desktop machine just fine so, on the face of things, it looks like the cd is OK.
GRUB not showing Peppermint ICE in the menu!
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 14, 2013
OS: Ubuntu 12,04
Netbook : Acer Aspire One D270
I chose to have Ubuntu 12.04 and Peppermint ICE as a dual boot. Since Installing from the live CD, the option of loading Peppermint OS is not appearing in the menu. On googling another thread (http://askubuntu.com/questions/17194...into-grub-menu) I found out a way to check if Peppermint is there on my system still. I ran the commands and saw that there is Pepperming OS still installed somewhere on the hard drive. I just don't have a option to boot it. Please find snapshot attached.
Any clues as to how to get back Peppermint into the GRUB menu?

[SOLVED] Ubuntu 11.04 Lunch bar and menu bar gone.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 5, 2011
So, I'm new to Linux in general. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 yesterday and played around a bit with Compiz, but as soon as I actually opened Compiz Manager of some sort the launch bar and the menu bar disappeared and i have no idea how to get them back. Restart does not help. And I'm rather worried that I have to reinstall Ubuntu. Therefore I hope you can help me restore my Ubuntu to it's former glory.
Thank you in advance
BOOT/GRUB/menu.lst Where is it in 10.10?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 29, 2010
I've worked with 8.04 and 9.10 of Ubuntu.
Since I use Grub to dual boot with Windows XP on the same drive I want it to default to Windows XP on the first line, and scroll down if I want to go into Ubuntu 10.10.
And I did this by modifying menu.lst file in the BOOT/GRUB directory but it is not there in my 10.10.
Where did it go and/or what does 10.10 use now to menu list the boot OS?
[SOLVED] Menu bars (top and left side) not appearing [Ubuntu 11.04]
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 21, 2011
I've been running Ubuntu 11.04 for about three months now, but mainly use it for browsing or homework, because of how fast it is compared to Windows, especially on the computer I use. Needless to say, I do not conisder myself any kind of computer expert.
The problem: I was looking around at games and options that are good with Ubuntu and downloaded a couple of games and compizconfig. When I downloaded and opened compizconfig, I turned on "opacify" and then I noticed that my menu bar had become a strange black and yellow distortion, otherwise everything was normal and fine. I turned opacify off, and it changed nothing. I restarted, and not only was the top menu bar gone, but so was the launcher on the left side of the screen. I cannot launch any programs, and it won't launch any keyboard shortcuts either as far as I can tell. My background and desktop items remain, but thats all. I can right click to change the background also.
I'm using GRUB, so I restarted and selected
Menu bar visible in fullscreen wine programs
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 8, 2012
I have a problem since upgrading to 12.04, when I launch fullscreen wine applications (ive tried 8 different ones so far, all the same problem) the the top global menu bar (with the time and date on it) still shows and i have the unity bar down the left hand side still.
This makes games unplayable, does anyone know a work around for this?
It's the same problem this guy has:
