location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 9, 2015
I have a problem with Linux Mint Cinnamon.Yesterday I tried to install some c++ packages for The Witcher 2 and then I realised I have updates.I installed them but I think I installed some level 5 ones. All worked fine until next day when I turned on the PC and instead of the login screen I had the monitor turned off.The CTRL+ALT+F1 worked fine.I've tried to resolve the error and I followed some other forums.I installed ubuntu-desktop, lightdm, xinit and fluxbox.
Before that I tried to run startx but I've got the error
[SOLVED] installed dwm lost login screen
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 15, 2015
I installed dwm off of slackbuilds 14.1 then logged out to log into dwm under a user name, my screen went "blank" with just my mouse pointer showing. I rebooted because I did, then when I came back it just booted up to the same screen. I had to switch to a different tty then logged in. ran xwmconfig picked dwm under my user name (not root) and it worked just fine. then I switched to another tty and logged in root and startx xfce4 starts just fine.
what is the login screen name thing and how can I get rid of it, or fix it, or know how to do both?

[SOLVED] PlayOnLinux Game Launches in full screen with GNOME panel at end of screen
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 16, 2011
I installed a game in POL for my niece in Linux Mint 11 (the game ran perfectly in full screen). I have since downgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. I use manual partitions so all my settings remain in the home directory. I went to launch Sims 3 in POL and it runs in full screen alright but the GNOME panel appears at the end of the screen.
I did go to Wine config and selected 'Emulate a virtual desktop' and then tried to launch the game via
~/.PlayOnLinux but it wont launch that way.
Can someone help me solve this? At least could someone tell me how to launch it in a window?

[SOLVED] Fedora 16 Virtual Box Additions Screen resolution (new issue).
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 13, 2012
Hello, I'm having an issue with my Fedora 16 VM. I am currently preparing for my Linux + certification and am running a couple different Fedora VMs.
On my laptop, I am running Fedora 13 in Virtual Box. Once I initially installed it and installed guest additions, I had to us this solution to obtain my proper screen resolution.
Later on, at home, I went to install Fedora 16 (newest version) on my gaming desktop at home. Again, after installing the guest additions, I edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to include my needed resolution (1600x900).
Once I change the configuration file and reboot, after fedora loads the kernel, before loading the GUI, I get several lines of error code (referencing Guest Additions) and the system halts and doesn't boot. I have tried several times and continue to get the same issue.
So the solution works in Fedora 13, but I can not get it to work in 16. Does anybody have any suggestions? Had this problem? I will post a screen shot in a moment.
[SOLVED] Ubuntu Apache web server not restarting /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 3, 2011
We have a peculiar problem with our production web server, where I am unable to restart Apache.
Usually, I would just do a /etc/init.d/apache2 restart, and everything would be okay. However, now the restart command is not doing anything whatsoever. Something has got messed up...
It appears that I have multiple versions of start/stop scripts:
stop lubuntu login screen to auto start
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 21, 2012
there is one desktop in my office that is dual boot running ubuntu v.10 and ms-os (boot to grub). since last week, in my spare time, I try to fix it. the ms-os is infected by virus (what a surprise), because a co-worker bring her children to work and they installed any random games that internet can offer. obviously it got infected. so i wipe out that lame os.
but than i update ubuntu to kernel 3.2 and sudo apt-get install lubuntu, because unity reduce productive for office duty.
this is the first time i use lubuntu, so i know a little in how to configure it...
for example, every time i login, i got bombarded by unnecessary error pop-up along with request to report it. how to stop this auto report? the error is not that important, since after i close the report request, lubuntu just running fine.
i figure disabling as much as possible start-up service perhaps will solve the problem. mainmenu >preferences > desktop session setting offer less option than gnome-desktop start-up
[SOLVED] If my web server is that restrictive, how can a hacker compromise my system?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 28, 2012
I am making a LAMP web server with only port 80 and 443 (and SSH but not on 22) opened up.
I used all the tips that you find when you google "Secure PHP","Secure Apache", I disabled ExecCGI etc.. I changed port for SSH, used fail2ban.
I used a program to monitor any change in my /var/www folder.
My /var/www folder doesn't have the typical directory names that bots look for.
I secured my fstab to tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults,ro 0 0.
In my PHP app, I took all measures against XSS and SQL Injections (using PDO prepared statement for both insertions and selects).
File permissions are the right ones.
But by only closing all ports except those I mentioned, how can a hacker compromise my system? How could he possibly access critical system files?
Thanks a lot in advance
