[SOLVED] Hardware health check
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 22, 2012
I have a number of blade servers (IBM Blade Center HS22 7870) under my administration. I use Nagios to monitor various system attributes like memory utlization, CPU ...etc
Now i need to monitor the hardware. For example, disk health, whether or not a disk is having bad sectors, servers temperature ...etc. Is there a product or a way by which i can do those checks? I already tried IBM System Director 6.3 but it's cumbersome (2 GB) and very difficult to install. I was looking for something that's more lightweight.
Thanks a lot in advance
[SOLVED] How to check disk health
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 24, 2015
On our RHEL 5 64 bit server we have installed Oracle EBS. From some days we are unable to connect from the app to the db. I suspect there is some issue with the disks because only on this machine (it is a desktop class machine) I am unable to copy files by winscp.
How can I verify that the disks are ok?
[SOLVED] Hardware/graphic card powerful enough to play 1080p videos
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 13, 2011
I'm trying to make my desptop playing some 1080p videos.
Mainly .mkv files (8/12GB each).
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be powerful enough.
The CPU gets to 100% and the videos don't play smoothly.
They all get played jerkily...
(I've seen VLC 1.1.11 using 110% of my CPU - not sure whether it's multi threaded or not -
but still it couldn't play the 1080p videos).
Tried many other video player... no luck.
My computer has the following specs:
OS: Ubuntu 10.04
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz
MB: Asus P5VD2-X
GPU: GeForce 7300 (128MB dedicated / 512MB shared - PCI-E 16x)
RAM: 4GB (3GB available)
Now, I consider the graphic card to be the bottle neck here,
because if it was more powerful it wouldn't bother the CPU so much (correct me if I'm wrong),
so I was thinking of replacing it with something like:
Nvidia Geforce 8400GS 1GB DDR3 - Gainward (29 euros - http://www.shoptec.it/browse/item/fn0690)
Nvidia Geforce GF210 1GB DDR3 -

[SOLVED] how to check if package is installed (quickly)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 20, 2008
Let's say I want to see if I have installed the "bridge-utils" package previously (say with sudo apt-get bridge-utils).
I know I can start up the Synaptic Package Manager, and search for it and see if it is "checked", but is there a quick way to do it from the terminal?
Also, is there a way I can tell how a package was installed (ie. with apt-get, aptitude, or manually)?
[SOLVED] How to check log files for ssh connection attempts
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 3, 2011
I've setup a ssh server at home to do ssh tunneling so I can use my tablet on public wifi.
How I can check the logs file(s) for attempts of others trying to connect to my ssh server. btw, I am using a 5 digit number as the ssh port.
I never hardly look at any logs files because they are so cryptic to understand. I need help on what to look for whether the attempt to connect was successful or not.

[SOLVED] How to check if a SD card is bootable with extlinux
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 17, 2011
I installed different linux distros on a SD card (for travelling).
How can I check if this SD card will be bootable? (my old PC dont boot via SD/USB, so I cannot verify is everything is correctly installed and cannot verify if the SD card on an USB adapter would run). I am travelling next sunday from Germany to Ireland and will have access to PCs which are bootable via USB; I would like to test it till Sunday).
PS: my ASUS with Ubuntu is at the repair-shop
[SOLVED] Hardware RAID vs Software RAID and DATA RECOVERY
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 2, 2008
Hello all! So I have been going back and forth between setups for my home web server and file server. I used to have 2x 160GB hard drives in software RAID 1 and a single 500GB hard drive for storage. I recently purchased 3 more 500GB hard drives and swapped out the 2x 160GB with the new 500GB's.... Over the weekend and Canada Day I loaded Cent OS 5.0 with two pairs of the 500GB's in software RAID 1....
Here are my questions:
1) Which type of RAID should I use, hardware or software?
2) Is hardware RAID faster (I would assume so but only if you have the right hardware - my home computer is not a power edge dell)
3) How do I recover if the hardware or software RAID fails. I do believe that if you were running hardware raid and the motherboards on-board controller fails you would have to replace the board with the exact same board and controller. If you were using software raid and it fails can I just pull the drive and plug it in like an external drive to retrieve data? Or how
