[solved] how to install 64bit desktop with software raid 1
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 19, 2013
i am looking for infos how to install my pc with 13.04 64bit desktop version together with software raid1 on my 2 ssd disks.
at https://help.ubuntu.com/13.04/ the link for the desktop help is dead. the link for the server edition show infos about the installer how to setup the installation with a software raid.
when i try to follow this instruction i found that "physical volume for RAID" in the installer is missing.
is there a diffence in the installer between desktop and server or is this an error?
i have searched the bugs in launchpad but could not find a corresponding bug.
is it possible to make the raid setup manually and continue with the installer?
[SOLVED] How do I install GRUB on both MBRs of a two disk RAID1 array (Ubuntu server)?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 21, 2008
I'm very new to Linux but have set myself some goals and am learning as I go.
I have installed Ubuntu Server 8.04 on a new server with two SATA disks configured as RAID1. There are several partitions on each disk, the first one on each disk set as bootable. ('dev' and 'boot' both appear under '/', which is on the first partition)
The server boots fine via GRUB and runs ok.
/proc/mdstat shows md0 thru to md5, listed as sda1, sda5, sda6,sda7, sda8, sda9, and similarly for sdb1, sdb5, etc. and each one shows as active raid1 [UU]. So far so good.
What I want to do now is install GRUB on the 2nd disk and make other necessary config changes so in the event the 1st disk fails then I can still boot off the 2nd disk.
$ sudo grub-install /dev/sdb1
It returned several lines including 'Installation finished. No errors reported'. It also reported device.map as set to:
To double-check I ran:
$ cat /boot/grub/device.map and it returned..
[SOLVED] How much space for a full install plus a few extras.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 31, 2013
I know this is a bit of an open-ended question but I am considering dual booting Debian and Slackware again (I have a long term plan to migrate to Slackware when I can wean myself off dependency-resolving package management). My Debian install is taking 27.6GB of the 60GB SSD I want to use for / -- that leaves, according to conky, 24.5GB free. Is a 20GB partition for / likely to be enough for a multilib install of Slackware plus about another 500MB of third-party software? My Debian install is quite bloated due to my having installed KDE, Gnome, Enlightenment and a good many other DEs and WMs as well as the XFCE I use so I can, if needed, shrink my Debian install but do I need to?
