(SOLVED!) Permission denied when moving files
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 23, 2010
I am a website developer and having previously used the Microsoft Windows way of doing things for many years, I am experiencing growing pains getting to grips with the users, groups and permissions system in Ubuntu. For example I keep getting 'permission denied' errors when I try to move my existing website folder hierarchy (html, php, etc) to \var\www\, which is the document root for the web server, so they have to be in that folder in order to get served. The only way I have so far found to get round this problem without wasting precious time is to log in as root, but clearly this is hardly a good idea for system integrity.
Does someone know a better way? A shell script for moving a batch of files from the home folder to /var/www/ would be ideal, but as a Ubuntu newbie it might take me ages to work out exactly how to do that.

Permission Denied! Tar Extraction, File System
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 9, 2012
I was attempting to install Python 3.2.3 today, older versions called IDLE can be found as packages (I know).
I downloaded the Tar ball. Now, How to extract and install properly on my file system is confusing to me.
Archive manager likes it when I press extract but doesn't like it when I try to create a folder in /ect so I can put this where I want it.
I think that extracting this tar ball to the desktop is a bad idea.
Anyone out there want to throw some ideas my way to help me understand the darkness in my head. Thx.
Permission denied problem. Bug?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 31, 2010
Reinstalled a fresh copy of Ubuntu 9.10.
Accordingly to the official manual installed LAMP.
sudo tasksel install lamp-server
Last step is to change my ip in my.cnf.
Opened it with the command terminal.
$ sudo nano /etc/mysql/my.cnf
Changed my ip.
Tried to save and:
Error writing /etc/mysql/my.cnf: Permission denied
Tried to manually open my.cnf, change my ip and save it and:
Could not save the file /etc/mysql/my.cnf.
You do not have the permissions necessary to save the file. Please check that you typed the location correctly and try again.
I didn't install anything before that, not even updates.
Just installed LAMP on a fresh copy of Ubuntu.
Is this a bug or what?

location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 21, 2011
Thank you all for your help in advance. I am attempting to setup an Ubuntu server as a secondary DNS server. It seems whenever it tries to dump the master file the system log shows Permission denied.
Any help would be appreciated. Please let me know if more information is needed.

cp: cannot stat: Permission denied, even though file is 644?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 5, 2009
I've got a funny problem: I have some files lying around in /root/bla/, all these files are 644 and /root/bla/ is 755. Still, when I try (as a different user) to cp /root/bla/file ., I get a "cp: cannot stat: Permission denied". I also cannot ls /root/bla/, I also get a Permission denied... what gives?
Thanks a lot in advance,
[SOLVED] Permission denied to root trying to remove directory
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 20, 2011
Trying to rmdir in Opensuse 11.1 as root. Error returned is "Permission denied". Perms are drwxrwxsr-x.
I have tried command line and Konqueror with equally dismal results.
Also, tried to search for an answer without luck. I am a casual linux user only.
[SOLVED] permission denied on everything using debian 7
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 17, 2014
well, i was having issues with the lfs build i was trying on my suse box, so i swapped out the hard drive and installed debian 7. it is acting worse than the suse. almost every command i give has to be sudo or it says permission denied. i got up the the binutils build doing this, pain in the butt, but workable. when i got to the gcc build, it wouldn't change the default dynamic linker. i tried putting sudo in front of the first lins, but i get the error message that says "sudo: command for not found". i set all the permissions like the book said, followed step by step. i have been all the way through this build five times now and haven't gotten past this part for one reason or another. hell, if i ever got to the next one i should have found ways around everything that could happen.
