[SOLVED] run something not attached to xterm
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 29, 2010
I prepared this small script, its like this
#restart the stuck firefox
it fires firefox but it doesn't ends before I close firefox,
What I want it to do is this script to fire up a firefox and close itself, I want firefox to keep running even if I close that xterm, just like firefox started from gnome panel.
I would also love if someone explains what actually happens when i click firefox icon from gnome, does it run unattached or does it run attached to tty7 or tty1 ?
[SOLVED] snort will not run on eth1 in mint17
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 10, 2014
Truth is I cannot see it running on any eth. Set up as usual and took the defaults from 'apt-get install' then went to change the looked at connection in 'snort.debian.conf' from eth0 to eth1 for the wifi. Ran 'pgrep -lf snort | grep eth0 (or eth1) and got nothing. Much has changed in this iteration of Mint, just wondered if I have to do some major config of snort.conf.

Edit - Actually, my mistake, simply a blank USB stick in there that meant it was trying to boot from that rather than from the HDD.
[SOLVED] Wiress connection not detected under Ubuntu 12.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 26, 2013
I have this problem: my Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't not recognyze any wireless networks. I don't know what to do. I've been searching and it seems to be a regular problem for other users, and I tried some of the solutions they've got, but they didn't work for me.
I have installed Window 7 too and the wifi do works with it, so I assume that the card it's not failing.
I'm using a 32bit Toshiba Satellite.
I've checked for Additional Drivers, and the Broadcom STA wireless driver is installed and activated and it says that it's being used. But I cannot see any networks. I can only connect through wired network.

[SOLVED] Login freezing/not working on 2 Ubuntu versions and Mint 6.0
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 15, 2009
I was using Ubuntu 8.10, when someday, when a restarted the laptop the login screen was flushing continuously and i wasn't able to login. Only with ALT+F1 i could get into the sistem. Since anyway i was planning to upgrade to 9.04, i didn't bother to see what was happend.
Then i run 9.04 for a few days when the same problem occured. That was very ugly, i belived it was because of some bugs in Ubuntu distributions since it happend on two diferent bersion.
I heard of Linux Mint, so i have installed it 3 days ago, and now it is the same problem, login screen does not load, keeps flushing and playing the welcome sound in backgroud continuously - now am writing from an ugly windows XP.
Since it apear that it is doing something in the backgroud like it was tring to show the login screen i get into concole and i looked at:
tail -f /var/log/syslog and it keep showing repeatedly something like this:
gdmgreeter : GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL: gdk_pixbuf_get_width: assertion `GD

[SOLVED] 64bit or not 64bit....?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 21, 2011
I have a dual-boot system running an Intel Pentium Dual E2180 CPU (the system monitor tells me, I haven't a clue!) and have always run the 32-bit version of Ubuntu. At the moment, 11.04 Narwhal.
When I next move to a newer version, should I choose the 64-bit version? I am aware that there can be problems/disadvantages with the 64-bit version, but after a bit of Googling it is difficult to find out what these are. Many articles concerning this subject are very out of date. I wondered if any LQers could either advise me or point me in the direction of any good articles on the subject.
Am I right in thinking that the 64-bit version will enable both "sides" of the processor to work in tandem on one task, whereas at the moment they can only work on different tasks independently? Or have I got that wrong?
Thank you for any advice you can give.
