[SOLVED] Searching the mass of /usr/share/doc
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 12, 2008
Most of the time, programs and developer libraries put their documentation in /usr/share/doc, but often times, I find it hard to find anything and the directory is huge. What I'd really like is an interface that gives me one application to browse all of the documentation, be it info or man pages, HTML files, SGML docbooks, or otherwise. (It would be REALLY cool if I could type this into, say, my web browser). I thought of something like Beagle, but it doesn't search info pages or SGML docbooks, and htdig only searches HTML files.
Has anyone thought of any creative solutions for handling this?

I'm trying to install a antivirus software, which my university provides. After nummerous attempts it works partially, meaning, i can scan my drives, directories and stuff but i can't use the buil-in on-access scanner.
After looking in the manual, i found out, that this seems to be a well known problem for red hat 64 bit distributions and derivatives. For me, using fedora 15 64bit, this means, i have to install the following packages:
I was able to find the second one, but i can't find the first one. I searched in the fedora database, on the gnu site, an other locations, google suggested.
Could anyone help me out, i really appreciat it!
[SOLVED] Searching in Linux: locate vs. find
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 29, 2011
Hi, it's late night, and I'm on disk searching commands with my unixacademy DVD training. It primarily discusses two search tools: locate and find.
I understand the difference between two. What I'm asking is, I don't see "locate" to be much used as "find". I read few books and most of them discuss "find", but not "locate". I also searched on forums, most questions about "find".
What I'm asking: is "locate" a general mainstream or some kind of "exotic" command?
[SOLVED] Searching an program to simplify rotate, zoom and crop photos
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 3, 2013
I would like to make an large number of photos from an oscilloscope screen. The photos will show the screen with its rectangular frame almost flat on, but will have some minor random deviations in size and angles.
Do you know an program that i can set up in such a way that it either automatically recognices the frame around the tube (can be easily set up for an clear contrast) or at least has an easy and comfortable way to manually select the four edges.
Then the program should automatically rotate, zoom and crop the photo that the new image is just the content of the frame in an standardized image size.
Thank you for your suggestions.

[SOLVED] searching recursively with ls
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 2, 2008
is there a way to search through the file system recursively with ls and see the directory in which the results reside?
for example, if i type the following command:
i get a list of all the files in my present working directory and below it, with a separate header for each subdirectory.
if i try:
ls -lhR|grep ubuntu
i get a list of every file in my present working directory and below that has "ubuntu" in its filename, i just don't have any indication of what subdirectory the files are in. if i could get that, it would be perfect.
also, when i'm pasting shell commands into posts in this forum, how do i get those neat little boxes around the commands so that my posts look better than this one?
[SOLVED] Searching all computers on a LAN (OSS and Yacy)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 3, 2010
The issue: the organisation has accumulated many/important documents, currently on personal computers. Looking for documents is difficult. We're implementing a document management system but it will take time, especially for users to change working habits.
The opportunity: a "quick win" with a solution to search documents on all computers on the internal network, available to users of each computer.
Candidate solutions: after researching products -- including Datapark, Docfetcher, Flax, Hadoopi, Lucene, Nutch, Omega, Open Search Server (OSS), OpenPipeline, Recoll, Sixsearch, Sphinx, Tracker, Xavian, Xesam (formerly wasabi), Yacy and ore.xapian -- only two candidates identified that run on Linux, OSX and Windows:Open Search Server (OSS)
The questions: Are there any other candidate solutions worth considering? What is the real-world experience of using the candidates (neither is primarily designed for this task; both are primarily web search engines)?
