Why would "Seamless Mode" be grayed out and unselectable?

VirtualBox Seamless Mode
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 23, 2014
Activating seamless mode in the past has been simple. Just install guest additions and its there.
However this time its not.
I have VMs set up and working, using both 12o4 and 14o4 with metacity and openbox as window managers. VB was install from the VB site a few days ago (4.3.14). Host is Fallback 12o4-kernel 22.214.171.124 and guest are also set up on the latest kernel 12o4/126.96.36.199 and 14o4/3.13-34.60. Dkms is installed.
I have verified that guest have guest additions installed (ls /opt). When I run "lsmod | grep -i vbox" I get this:
$ lsmod | grep -i vbox
vboxpci 23237 0
vboxnetadp 25670 0
vboxnetflt 27612 0
vboxdrv 409615 6 vboxpci,vboxnetadp,vboxnetflt
Am I missing a setting in bios that could do this? Running a Xeon x5650 processor.
VirtualBox + Seamless mode ... no menus
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 28, 2012
I've searched and read over tons of articles on this problem and none of them have any solution.
The menu that normally appears at the very top of the screen with the minimize, maximize, File, Edit, etc... does not appear in 11.10 when using Seamless mode.
How do you get these menus to appear? I can't minimize windows, get into preferences, or anything relating to typical program menus.. The Unity side bar appears just fine. I've been digging through Google for the past hour and keep going in circles. Some posts are saying "Host+F", which does fullscreen, so I'm not sure why they'd recommend that, or "Host+Home", which brings up the VM menu, not the application menu.
This is on a Windows 7 Host using latest Virtual Box - 4.1.8. Ubuntu 11.10, fresh guest install with guest additions and all that fun stuff.
xcompmgr casts shadow over display when using VirtualBox seamless mode
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 20, 2014
I'm running XUbunto and recently upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04
VirtualBox 4.3.12 leaves a "shadow" artifact across my host display when I run a VirtualBox guest VM (Windows 7) in seamless mode.
Here is a screenshot where you can see the effect on the right half of the desktop display.
I moved the (host) browser window so that it spans both monitors, you can see the shadow on top of the right side of it.
This shadow acts like another window - I can stack other host windows on top of it by selecting them, but as soon as I select a guest window,
the shadow is moved above the native host windows. The guest windows (seamless) have no shadow.
If I change from seamless to scaled, this shadow disappears.
xcompmgr -c -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55
to allow some apps like conky to run with a transparent background. If I kill xcompmgr this shadow
If I change from
xcompmgr -c -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55
xcompmgr -n -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55
[SOLVED] Virtualbox USB issues with Linux Host and Windows 7 Guest...
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 14, 2014
I have Linux Debian as a host, and am trying to run Windows 7 as a guest. I have installed the extension pack, the guest additions, the linux-headers, added usb filters, tried enabeling and disabeling usb 2.0. I have also tried adding myself to the vboxusers group.
Basically Windows always says the "device could not be recognized", and that is if I am NOT part of the vboxusers group, if I add myself and try again, Windows will hit the blue dump screen the moment I mount the USB drive. If I put on a filter for auto mount, the Windows system will literally hit a boot time blue dump screen over and over again sending it into a restarting loop.
I was originally able to install the Windows OS via an ISO file, so the virtualbox seems to have cd/dvd capabilities. I have never been able to get the drag and drop / shared clipboard to work either.
I have tried rebooting, restarting the modules and services, and adding just about ever extension pack available.
I have x64 computer wi
Programatically detect if I'm in VirtualBox seamless mode
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
Is there a way to detect whether I'm in VirtualBox's seamless mode from a guest machine? Or is there any command line option from VBoxControl.exe to detect this that I'm not seeing?
If that can't happen, can I programatically detect if a guest is in seamless mode from the host?
Virtualbox seamless mode not covering all screen
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 22, 2010
I've installed virtualbox on my Ubuntu in order to run Windows 7. Everything runs perfect, except one annoying thing... when in seamless mode the "virtual screen area" doesn't extend all the way to the right hand edge. There is a small gap, 4-5mm wide, between the edge of any Windows application and the edge of the entire screen. So it is very easy when using the scroll bar for a Windows application, to miss the scroll bar and place the cursor in that gap... and accidentally return to Ubuntu.
How to solve?
Running Virtualbox Seamless mode on boot
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 30, 2010
Essentially the title says it all. I have windows 7 installed and have no problems with virtual mode but how would I go about having the computer boot into ubuntu (KDE) then boot the virtual machine only to follow with seamless mode? I don't care if I can see the process work, by that I mean the booting of windows. Oh please don't ask why I would want this, I love linux but the world lives in windows not wine
Any Ideas? We need to be creative.
[SOLVED] ubuntu host: are virtualbox guest additions installed or starting up?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 28, 2010
Having Virtualbox guest additions installation or mounting problems maybe related to fstab. I added the virtualbox repository to synaptic repos and then installed virtualbox 3.2.8_ose and the virtualbox-guest-additions 3.2.8-1 on my ubuntu amd64 desktop host computer along with dkms, etc. Subsequently installed ubuntu desktop amd64 as my first virtualbox guest and have tried repeatedly to install the guest additions into the guest via both a cd .iso and from synaptic. In each case I thought I had installed the guest additions fine, but I have the feeling it either really hasn't installed or it isn't enabled. Hard time getting a virtual guest share up and running (but I'm brand new to this). Finally got an automatic share working through the back door via samba, which led me to believe my guest additions were installed.
However here is the output from my /var/log/VBoxGuestAdditions.log file:
