[SOLVED] Ubuntu 11.10 black screen after boot screen
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 13, 2011
I've been running Ubuntu 11.04, did a clean install 2 months ago. Today I got a update notification to upgrade to 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot and I was a bit hesitant at th beginning but then I said why not and went for it. All went fine at the start.
After it was done with upgrading and cleaning the packages it restarted and I was pretty amazed with the new light dm log in screen. However, I did a restart right away to complete the install. This resulted in a black screen after the boot screen.
I did get a "waiting for network configuration" at the first start up but didn't think any of it at the beginning and everything went fine. But after the second restart, I get the boot screen with the same message and then instead of a log in screen its just black.
I tried restarting form battery source, unplugging all the usb's I had connected but still I get this black screen.
It a bit annoying cause at the moment I can't get past this, therefore I have no access to anything,
[SOLVED] Display limited to 800x600 screen resolution on Ubuntu 9.04 on LG Flatron L1718S
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 3, 2010
Hie everyone! I'm vuelement. I'm a faithful user of Ubuntu Linux, especially 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. I have a problem with my screen resolution on my LG Flatron L1718S. It's a 17 inch and its recommended resolution is 1280x1024.I was on this resolution all along until now. Now I'm limited to 800x600 resolution. Here's what happened. Before installing Ubuntu 9.04 on a friend's computer, I put in his Seagate 40 Gig hard drive into his Intel Celeron Box with a 2.93 GHz and 512MB ram. I then plugged my monitor into his system. Upon booting, I discovered that the hard drive had a very strange looking operating system called OS2 Warp...seemed like Black XP to me. On the desktop, the icons were so big and bloated, the mouse was frozen, there was so much eyecandy which demanded so much graphics resources. His graphics card is an onboard one, framebuffer. I then rebooted the machine, this time running the Ubuntu 9.04 live CD. Resolution still ok, with 1024x768 this time. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 a

Post #24 is pretty straightforward. Essentially you are moving those directories and creating symlinks to the old locations for compatibility purposes. If you're struggling with a certain command read it's man page - e.g.
[SOLVED] System hangs after grub screen, Ubuntu 9.10 32bit
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 3, 2010
So I just did a fresh install of 9.10 32bit on my media pc, booted right up the first couple of times however it choose to stop doing so for some reason. When it boots I see the words "Grub Loading" flash on the screen and then it just goes to a black screen with the white flashing line in the upper left hand corner...
I'm open to suggestions on how I can go about resolving this issue, the system was running well and I'm not sure what exactly changed... I just went to reboot it and it wouldn't come back online.
Also worth noting is that it is also failing to boot from a LiveCD for me, I get the screen where I select how I want to boot from the disc, I select "try Ubuntu with out any changes to my computer" and then after that it hangs again.
I'm fairly certain the hardware is good as it never had any issues like this on Windows 7 and I can still boot properly from a Windows based disc.
[SOLVED] ubuntu9 no owner permissions + screen res max at 800x600
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 21, 2009
I installed ubuntu9 on an offline desktop system: intel pentium III 800 Dual-Boot with winXPsp1. I have no internet connection on this machine.
The ubuntu system does not recognize me as owner so I do not have owner permissions. Why does ubuntu not see me as owner and how can I fix this problem?
PLUS I can only get a maximum screen resolution of 800x600 with no recognizable monitors.
My XP system boots into 1024x768 and runs fine.
I also cannot figure out, for the life of me, how to install packages offline since I don't have an internet connection.
I've been through the forums and get totally confused with all the different answers and half-answers and the totally broken english replies.
Any help with any of these issues will be greatly appreciated.

[SOLVED] Copy and paste off screen text in Nano
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 5, 2012
Does anyone know how to copy and paste full lines from Nano? I can't seem to figure this out.
Long lines in Nano show a $ at the end, indicating there is more text off-screen. When you copy and paste from Nano to say, Gedit, you get the $, instead of the rest of the text. Not sure why anyone would ever want that, but I can't figure out how to avoid it!
