[SOLVED] [ubuntu] prevent loading X during startup after error in Xorg.conf
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 22, 2010
I am using ubuntu 10.04 and made some changes in Xorg.conf to try enabling twinview.
Unfortunately, Ubuntu just stops at the startup logo now.
Is there a way I can stop the loading of X, so I can undo the error in Xorg.conf and hopefully make Ubuntu load normally again?
Grub automatically loads Ubuntu, there is no Grub menu that allows loading of some alternative config.
Thanks in advance,

Can't load images JPG Solved
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 23, 2010
i'm having a problem opening photos taken with a nikon coolpix l10.
inserting the memory card and opening a random photo generates an error :
"Could not load image 'xxx.JPG'."
"Error interpreting JPEG image file (JPEG datastream contains no image)"
opening via terminal with gthumb gives the same error inumerous times :
"Error: Directory Nikon1 with 1000 entries considered invalid; not read.
Error: Upper boundary of data for directory Photo, entry 0x0000 is out of bounds: Offset = 0x00000001, size = 238602, exceeds buffer size by 195079 Bytes; adjusting the size
Warning: Directory Photo, entry 0x0000 has unknown Exif (TIFF) type 0; setting type size 1.
Error: Directory Thumbnail: Next pointer is out of bounds; ignored."
i tried renaming one of the pics to xxx.JPEG but still no luck (no thumbnail is shown either).
it happens with all photos taken with this camera and i can open these photos in other pc's.
can someone reproduce the same error?
[SOLVED] xorgserver1.7.1 shows only blank screen after update from xorgserver1.6.3
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 5, 2010
Hello linuxquestions.org members,
my laptop is running Slackware64 13.0. Today I tried to update to X.org 7.5 (version 1.7.1) from version 1.6.3 shipped with Slackware. I downloaded the relevant source tarballs from www.x.org and compiled them with no errors. The compiled packages are:
My laptop has an NVIDIA graphics card and I'm using the proprietary driver from NVIDIA. Thus I reinstalled the driver after the update and tried to launch X.org with "startx". After a short while the NVIDIA logo appears for some hundred milliseconds and disappears then. But now the screen is blank and it is not possible to switch to another VT via Ctrl+Alt+Fx. But it is possible to login from another computer and restart everything, so that I conclude that the system does not hang.
It is even po
[SOLVED] How to find, identify, write to or load a driver from CD ROM to LINUX UBUNTU 11.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 14, 2011
Installed LINUX UBUNTU 11.04 completely replacing Windows 7.
Bought Sabrent Wireless-G 802.11G PCI Adapter card with LINUX driver on a mini CD. No documentation accompanied the PCI card, it is probably on the CD.
I do not have a clue on how to proceed.
I think there is a mount command but some knowledge is required on how to issue a mount.
How do I identify the CD ROM?
How can I get to Read, write and Load a driver
Where do I put the driver software
How to "load" and "unload"/remove a CD or DVD
What commands do I issue

My objective is to get internet connectivity wirelessly via the card and also to learn to use the CDROM
[solved] fglrx = black screen, blinking Caps Lock
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 3, 2009
Ok, I'm trying this once again after posting a couple of times on other boards... So far I have to say I haven't gotten a whole lot of love from these boards regarding this problem, with yet a single reply, both from an older post when I ran Jaunty and a more recent one after my upgrade to Karmic (although I believe that was in the wrong board by mistake).
Now, I did a clean install of Karmic, and I've got everything up and running. I'm liking Karmic a lot so far, but there's one thing that's bugging me since I switched over from Windows: ATI's proprietary drivers. While I know this isn't specifically a Ubuntu thing, I would very much like to get them running with Compiz, etc. Right now, it's just not.
Here's what happens: when I enable the drivers (through the Administration>Hardware Drivers menu), the system won't load. I get the white Ubuntu after GRUB, then nothing but a blinking Caps Lock. Now, I've been looking into the problem, and I can't seem to figure out why.
