VNCServer on startup: What am I doing wrong?

I've created a symbolic link inside init.d/
Running vncserver at startup??
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 14, 2008
So here is the situation:
As of now, if i want to vnc into the console of my linux box......
1) I first must log into the box and invoke vncserver command so xvnc process starts.
2) Then from vncviwer from another box make connection with IP:0(0for console)
3) Dialog opens on vncserver box and i need to confirm.
I want to eliminate steps 1 & 3......
I noticed that Vncserver script is located in /etc/init.d, so i thought since the vncserver script starts a xvnc process, i naturally added vncserver to startup by using Chkconfig. However, even with vncserver added to runlevels 2-5 at startup, no xvnc processes are started.
I know i can accomplish by using Inetd or Xinetd, but i really want to know why this method doesn't seem to work. My xstartup script starts xvnc so why does the vncserver script therefore not start xvnc? thx
Ubuntu Server VNC Server Gray Screen
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 16, 2011
I have installed vnc4server
sudo aptitude install vnc4server xinetd
Then I did:
sudo vim ~/.vnc/xstartup
And uncommented the top two lines that are recommended to uncomment.
# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
Now when I use a vnc viewer on Windows 7 to view the Ubuntu Desktop I get the following:
Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.
Gray Screen with vncviewer
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 12, 2012
First, I realize that this question has been asked many times and I've spent time looking for answers in threads like this one
and this one
and countless others on the net but with no luck.
So, here's what I've been trying to do. I have two machines running Ubuntu. Machine # 1 has Ubuntu 11.10 and Machine # 2 has Ubuntu 12.04. Both machines are NOT on the same LAN. I'm trying to run vncserver on Machine # 2 and connect to it using vncviewer on Machine # 1 (over the internet). I configured Machine # 2 after reading the following webpage
Then, on Machine # 2, I type
vncserver -geometry 800x600
and then one Machine # 1, I type
(where XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX is the IP address Machine # 2). But all I see is a grayish-black screen on Machine # 1. Please see the enclosed picture
VNC suddenly returns gray screen with terminal nothing else
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 17, 2013
I am unsure what happened but my vncserver on my ubuntu 12 server stopped working right. I can still connect but I am greeted with a solid gray screen with a terminal box and a mouse pointer, not an x. If I close the box nothing happens. The strange part is it suddenly happened. Any ideas?
vncserver connection show blank screen
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 23, 2007
I'm using tightvnc viewer on my XP desktop and trying to remote desktop to a RH Linux ES 4 server. This has worked in the past. What is happening right now is that I connect to the server but only see a blank screen. I no longer have tool bars and icons. I've tried killing the vncserver and restarting it but I have the same problem. The xstartup and vncservers files have not been modified from when it was working.
[SOLVED] Generic kernel and full screen login?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 22, 2013
I switched to the generic kernel suggested by the mkinitrd script. It worked fine but now the login console is a tiny 640x480 block in the middle of the screen which sort of sucks if I choose to do some work in that environment.
This makes sense - I guess I've prevented the graphics driver from being loaded at start-up. Is there an easy way to have the other advantages from a generic kernel but have the graphics drivers load so the console is full screen?
[SOLVED] Cannot load GIMP
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 11, 2008
I have recently upgraded to Intrepid and all is well except for when I try to run GIMP from the Menu it will not launch (I get a box in the lower panel saying that GIMP is starting, but then disappears).
I have tried running GIMP from a terminal session running sudo gimp and I get the following error message:
(gimp:26196): LibGimpBase-WARNING **: gimp: wire_read(): error
Has anyone got any ideas on how to solve this?
Thanks very much
