FFMPEG: Converting for youtube gray screen problem
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 25, 2013
I recorded my screen using ffmpeg and converted from mkv to mp4 and uploaded to youtube. But all I see on the video is gray nothing else. The audio still plays though, I tried converting to numerous formats but no luck.
Here the code for recording the desktop (If it helps)
ffmpeg -f x11grab -r 25 -s 1366x768 -i :0.0 -f alsa -ac 2 -i pulse -vcodec libx264 -preset ultrafast -crf 0 video.mkv
How I tried converting:
ffmpeg -i foo.mkv bar.mp4
I also tried using parameter -vcodec but no luck.
Thanks In Advance
gray screen with box and no text on boot
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 9, 2013
I'm installing Fedora 18 on an older byo computer. I'm moving up from FC 16 to 18. FC 16 working correctly. After first boot, user creation, and network setup, rebooting gets me to an unusable computer with a gray screen and not text at all to guide me as to what is where.
I interupted the boot process and got to a grub prompt. Typed in the command videoinfo and received the following feedback after a long list of various resolutions
EDID Version 1.2
Preferred mode: 1024X768
Adapter `VGA Video Driver:'
No info available.
I think the problem is related to the screen resolution the instance of the OS is trying to set at first start but I don't know for sure. Not sure how to proceed from here since I do not get any text on the screen in XWindows.
[SOLVED] Slackware 14 w/XFCE Screen Shot Request
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 29, 2012
I've been using Ubuntu since 7.04, but two years ago I've switched to Debian 6.0 to stay with the Gnome 2.x Desktop versus the Ubuntu Unity Fiasco. But, Debian Wheezy is coming out with XFCE Desktop with their next version. So, I'm switching to XFCE, and I'm interested in trying Slackware 14 after reading this forum and the Slackware2.PDF.
I've looked on Distrowatch.com for a Screen Snapshot of what XFCE 4.10 looks like in Slackware, but the Screens are out of date. Could someone that has
XFCE installed in Slackware 14 post a typical Screenshot of Slackware, so I have an idea of what it really is? (Top Panel vs Bottom Panel, Docky or none, Colors etc.) (I've played with Vector Linux 7, but something didn't work correctly, and I now forget what that was, so I ruled it out for the time being, and I'm continuing my Distro search.)
I've downloaded Slackware, and burned the DVD, so I can print the Documentation. I might attempt a Guest Install in VirtualBox in a few days, after
[SOLVED] Creating a startup script for Openoffice in headless mode
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 15, 2012
I have installed openoffice via "yum install openoffice.org-headless" which installed openoffice as a dependency.
Openoffice should be installed, except I can't figure out how to stop or start it.
Running openoffice.org3 as some tutorials state renders a "command not found"
Other tutorials state I should create a .sh file in /etc/init.d/ to install openoffice as a service except the supplied file is for debian and doesn't seem to work on Centos 6.
Does anyone know where I could find such a file or where I could learn how to do it myself?
Thanks a lot!

location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 5, 2015
Hi, I have Linux Mint 17.1, HP Pavilion 23 All in one. Recently I was having issues with "choppy sound", and I tried the following:
$ sudo killall pulseaudio
$ sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio
$ sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio-utils gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio libpulse-browse0 paman pavumeter pavucontrol
$ sudo rm -rf /etc/asound.conf
$ sudo rm ~/.pulse-cookie
After the reboot, I have this issue, I only see the blackscreen of the X system and the mouse, I can have access to the terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1), but I don't know what am I need to do in order to get back my desktop... Any Ideas would be appreciated, thanks!
[SOLVED] Ubuntu 9.10: using screen in tty1tty6
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 12, 2009
Hi all, I am running Ubuntu 9.10 64bit and I am trying to use screen (the program for sharing a command line between two computers) on tty1 (or tty2-6, just not in a GUI tty). When I am in tty7 and I run screen I have no problem but when trying to use it in tty1 I receive the error "There is no screen to be attached matching [session_name]".
The commands I am using are verbatim from this guide.
The reason I do not want to use a GUI desktop is because I am running Cuda programs that effectively use all of my GPU processing power making the GUI useless.
Any help is greatly appreciated; thank you!
[SOLVED] Ubuntu 14.04 lts screen breaks up with horizontal lines, coloured rectangles ......
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 13, 2014
Greetings to all at the forum.
I hope that I can adequately describe my problem - here goes!!
My PC has Ubuntu 14.04 lts as its only operating system after getting rid of windows xp.
The system boots perfectly, giving me a screen with appropriate wallpaper and vertical directory bar on the left hand side. Most of the time I can open firefox, surf the net, consult emails, exit & close down the system without any problem.
However, If I click on the "Ubuntu" button on the top left hand side (is this the dash?) havoc breaks loose on the screen. Horizontal lines of different colours appear & the vertical directory bar dissappears! A diagonal line from bottom left to top right breaks screen into two parts. Sometimes an upsidedown image of my wallpaper appears in one of the sections. The screen flickers with coloured rectangles as well. A couple of times there has been totally black screen with the cursor (which moves but does nothing)
I hope that I have been able to gi
[SOLVED] Fedora terminal colors in screen, vim
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 5, 2015
I recently upgraded from Fedora 20 to 21 (using fedup). I've noticed in Fedora 21, screen only shows as supporting 8 colors. In particular, I see that color schemes in vim are not showing up properly.
I found this wiki entry which suggest screen should automatically support 256 colors:

[SOLVED] GIMP not displaying splash screen

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this problem. I want The GIMP to show a splash screen when I launch it, which it's supposed to do automatically, but for some reason mine doesn't.
When I do gimp --verbose, I get the following messages:
