Sound problem with Sacred Gold (native port)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 22, 2009
I am very new to Ubuntu but I'm very experienced with Linux. I'm
coming from Gentoo most recently though I have used debian long ago.
I'm having a problem with sound in the native port of Sacred by LGP
(among other things). During the opening movies and the in game
movies I get a lot of crackly distortion, to the point that I can't
make out the sound. Usually sound give out before the end of the
movie and I get silence. (I've also seen the with the opening movies
in X2 but I have not tried to play X2.) In game, I get crackling
mixed in with the in game atmospherics. On rare occasion I've had
similar with World of Goo and Zaz.
I've tried search for help with Sacred on Ubuntu specifically but
have had little luck. In general I saw a lot of problem involving
games and pulseaudio. LGP recommended using pasuspender & padsp,
neither of which helped. They also recommended using an OSS kernel
module for ALSA but said I'd need to get distro specific directions
[SOLVED] Mistake when fixing sound problem with Skype
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 3, 2013
Once again I had a problem getting any sound from Skype after upgrading. This time from Linux Mint 15 to 16. Once again, the only way of getting it working was to get rid of Pulseaudio altogether. I happened to (by mistake, I think) close the terminal too soon after the killall business, and now I get a report: ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR
E:Invalid record in the preferences file /etc/apt/preferences, no Package header
I find a file /etc/apt/preferences containing only the word "exit", nothing more. Can I safely get rid of that file without causing any damage?
Sound Problem with Adobe Flash Player on Debian Lenny
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 23, 2010
I've got a problem with my flash player on Iceweasel (Debian's Firefox). It's mute and it plays all movies without sound. I've changed my sound driver to PulseAudio and other different drivers but couldn't fix it.
Any idea about what I have to do?
I'm running Debian Lenny AMD64.
sound problem with wine
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 1, 2009
I just downloaded TefView 2.65, a guitar tablature reader and can run it through wine. Now everything works with it except the sound. I have followed a few threads and checked the wine config and all the sound tests work. Does that tell me anything? Another thread held out little hope getting the midi out working in wine on some other software. I should say that the sound on my computer works fine in every other application so I assume it must be wine that is the problem. Can anyone tell me where to start looking to fix this or is there a guitar tab reader that runs on Linux?

Sound problem with Suse 10.1 + Addons CD on a Toshiba Satellite P105 SP921
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 13, 2006
Hi, i got a problem with my distro Suse 10.1 on my Laptop, the sound doesnt work... I don't know what to do, someone can help me please. I'm not a newbie, i already check the volume... and the mixer that is not the problem... i think that the suse 10.1 is not compatible with that sound card. I was reading some forums and i found that someone have the same problem with another laptop with the same sound card and he said that the kernel don't have the driver for the sound card.
I check the ALSA Project page and try to install the last version of it, but when i install it stop working the nvidia driver for graphics. And i don't found my sound card on the list of supported sound cards...
Someone can help me to resolve my problem??

Hi there! Many thanks for your help.
First, I disabled pulse audio. Afterwards, I ran the following commands:
service alsa force-stop
modprobe snd-hda-intel model=intel-mac-v5
Sound worked fine. Note, I needed to disable pulse audio from MCC. Thank you so much.
Sound problem with Powerbook running Ubuntu
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 8, 2006
I have installed Ubuntu Dapper on a Powerbook (G4 500mhz), and the sound is garbled. Listening to music with Rhythmbox is impossible. After searching Google, I tried using a .asoundrc file to play with the buffer settings, but the sound was still all over the place. I found another forum post stating that using OSS emulation would work, I tried this with amaroK, and while this combined with the .asoundrc file improves playback significantly, I still get enough gaps in the audio to make it a problem for music.
The card was detected as a "Power Mac screamer", although curiosly, it stopped showing up as my default soundcard under System->Preferences->Sound (which is now blank).
Here is my .asoundrc file:

Problem with apache and port 443
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 26, 2009
When I start apache I get the following error:
(98 )Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:443
netstat -an | grep :443
nothing showed up.
lsof -i :443
also nothing showed up.
killall -9 apache2
then tried to start apache again but got the same error.
I don't have any service other than ssh running on the server.
I edited /etc/apache2/ports.conf commented out Listen 443 and started apache2. It worked just fine.
Then I re-enabled Listen 443 and did
and now HTTPS works.
My question what could be binding the port? How can I find it if netstat and lsof are not showing it?
I just don't won't to keep using this work around.
