ssh error: "shift: 28: can't shift that many" ssh'ing to my ubuntu box times out
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 11, 2012
Hello, I have openssh installed on my ubuntu box.
I've suddenly come across a problem recently (no change was made to the box before this happened), where I can't ssh into the ubuntu box. I get "Operation timed out."
When I go to the ubuntu box, I run 'ps -ef |grep "sshd"' and I run 'ps -A | grep sshd' to check if ssh is running, and it's indeed running. But when I try "sudo /etc/init.d/ssh" to check the status of ssh, I get the error "shift: 28: can't shift that many."
I can ssh to localhost fine on that box. And from another computer on the network, I can ssh to the ubuntu box's 192.168... address just fine. And when I ping the ubuntu box IP address from another computer (my router is set to port forward to the ubuntu box on the ssh port), I get packets received no problem.
But if I ssh from another computer to my ubuntu box, I get a timeout error.
Does anyone have any idea why I may be getting a timeout error? The only error
SSH error: Could not load host key.

I am trying to break free of MS server and become proficient with Linux, and I've been doing pretty well so far, but this error has me stumped. I have searched high and low for a fix to this error, and while I have found many fixes, they simply aren't working for me. I keep running up against the same problem. OpenSSH reports "Could not load host key". WHY?
I am running 10.04 LTS and installed OpenSSH.
Here is my sshd_config file
# Package generated configuration file
# See the sshd_config(5) manpage for details
# What ports, IPs and protocols we listen for
# Use these options to restrict which interfaces/protocols sshd will bind to
# HostKeys for protocol version 2
#Privilege Separation is turned on for security
# Lifetime and size of ephemeral version 1 server key
ssh error no route to host
- date: October 16, 2012
I have two PCs connected to a wireless router. One of them is connected wirelessly and one ethernet, they both were assigned ips of 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.4 respectively. They both are able to connect to the internet and both have ssh installed.
problem im getting is when I ssh [email protected]
it comes back with error "no route to host" . Im able to ssh into [email protected]
from my android tablet but i cant ssh to 192.168.1.4 either.
I checked the firewall status using ufw status and it said it was inactive, this goes for both PCs so i dont think its a firewall problem
Does anyone have any ideas?
Also PC 192.168.1.3 is running ubuntu 12.04 and PC 192.168.1.4 is running xubuntu 12.04
Thanks ahead of time!
strange ssh error

This is my 1st post in ubuntu forms (I'm a usual native of Fedoraforums).
I seem to have a bizarre ssh connection problem between ubuntu and fedora. Let me explain:
I have 2 boxes on the same network PC 1 = Sneezy PC 2= Sleepy (sorry seven dwarves for names etc)
Sneezy is Fedora 12 running:
~]$ uname -a
Linux sneezy.thejollies.com 188.8.131.52-127.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Sat Nov 7 21:25:57 EST 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
~]$ ssh -V
OpenSSH_5.2p1, OpenSSL 1.0.0-fips-beta4 10 Nov 2009
Sleepy is Ubuntu 9.10 running:
:~$ uname -a
Linux sleepy 2.6.31-15-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 10 14:53:52 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
:~$ ssh -V
OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-6ubuntu2, OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct 2007
I have setup the public key authentication between all my other machines and they work fine as does SNEEZY to SLEEPY (Fedora to Ubuntu) But......Ubuntu to Fedora seems to connect, but doesn't seem to connect. See

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 (OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu3, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009)
I am trying to setup passwordless ssh/scp for some servers on a LAN
I am running the following commands:
SSH: error: Bind to port 22 on 0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use.

I have a server which has 2 IP addresses (2 NIC)
Anyway, I have always SSH in to this server, via the private ip from another server. In fact, I can ssh into this server via another server even if I use the public IP.
Problem is, now I can't access the server via the public ip directly (over internet etc)
in /var/logs/secure, I am getting...
problem with rsync over ssh, Error:No such file or directory (2)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 20, 2009
Hi everybody. this is my first post here.
I use this code to sync my two ubuntu 9.04 machines:
rsync -av 192.168.0.1:/home/farsheed/projects/BurnCity/ /home/farsheed/Public
After entering the remote machine password, I got this error:
receiving incremental file list
rsync: change_dir "/home/farsheed/projects/BurnCity" failed: No such file or directory (2)
sent 8 bytes received 10 bytes 0.88 bytes/sec
total size is 0 speedup is 0.00
rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1524) [receiver=3.0.5]
Could anyone help me to solve my problem. I know the directory exists.
Thanks in advanced.
rsync e ssh error protocol incompatibility

I'm trying to sync my remote web folder with my local one
$ rsync -navz -e ssh [email protected]
I am prompted for the password.
After I enter the password I get
protocol version mismatch - is your shell clean?
(see the rsync man page for an explanation)
rsync error: protocol incompatibility (code 2) at compat.c(69)
$ which ssh returns /usr/bin/ssh
ssh is working
My rsync version is 2.6.2-0.
My kernel is 2.6.5-1.358 with Fedora Core 2.
My host's remote kernel is 2.4.29-2-s5
What can I do?
SSH Error messages

SSH error: “Corrupted MAC on input” or “Bad packet length”
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 18, 2012
I have 3 boxes set up as shown:
The DFW box can communicate to the SFO / internet just fine, and I send files AUS -> DFW. However, every time I trying transferring DFW -> AUS it fails over SSH (ssh client, rsync, scp, sftp, etc) with the following error:
Corrupted MAC on input.
Disconnecting: Packet corrupt
Occasionally I'll get a different error:
Bad packet length 2097180.
Disconnecting: Packet corrupt
I've restarted the DFW box, as well as replaced the network cable. I'm not sure what else might be causing problems.
Right now to get files from DFW I have to use DFW -> SFO -> AUS which is not optimal.
