SSH Key Converting PEM to PUB
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 14, 2010
I'm using a code editor called Espresso on Mac that has a built in SFTP feature but doesn't like using .pem keys. Instead, it looks for the keyfile to be ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub or ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub. My .pem file is currently at ~/.ssh/TTS.pem. I'm trying to connect to an instance on Amazon EC2 which generated that TTS.pem private key file.
I tried renaming my key from TTS.pem to id_rsa.pub and although I can connect just fine using this renamed key in Terminal, Espresso still doesn't like it. I contacted their support and they told me to regenerate new keys instead of renaming .pem's. Could that have an impact on this?
To generate new keys, can I just run the ssh-keygen command on my Mac and upload/set the generated public key using AWS Management Console?
I absolutely cannot get SSH key authentication to work.

I'm trying to use an SSH key pair to log into a remote Ubuntu 12.04 server from Putty on Windows. I keep getting "Server refused our key." Here are the steps that I have taken:
Repeated several tutorialsLoaded key in Putty config and/or Pageant~ is encrypted when logged out; moved .ssh/authorized_keys to /etc/ssh/publickeys/authorized_keys (and changed sshd_config)My user on remote host owns publickeys/ and authorized_keysI have tried chmod 700, 600, 644, and any other mode suggested on Google searches for thisI copy/pasted from Puttygen to add the public key to authorized_keys and made sure the extra lines were not presentI SFTP'd the Puttygen public key file to publickeys/I used ssh-keygen to generate the pair on the remote host and transfer the private key from there to my desktop (I know this is bad practice) and then used puttygen to convert it to .ppk
None of the above has worked and I've done this (generated and used key pair for login) before successfully on OS X a
Disabling Gnome SSH key Dialog
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 12, 2008
Can anyone please tell me how to disable the graphical dialog that pops up to unlock my ssh keys? I've tried uninstalling both seahorse and ssh-askpass-gnome, but I still get this dialog box. All I want to do is stay in my terminal window if I'm sshing from my terminal window.
[SOLVED] rsync fails in cron ssh key prob for rsync?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 8, 2010
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server and Postgresql 8.4.
I have a .sh script that is run by cron every other hour. That works fine.
The .sh script includes an rsync command that copies a postgresql dump .tar file to a remote archive location via ssh. That fails when run by cron; I think because it is (quietly) asking for the remote user's password (and not getting it). I set up the public/private ssh key arrangement. The script succeeds when run manually as the same user that the cron job uses, and does not ask for the password. I am able to ssh to the remote server from the source server (using the same username) and not get the password prompt (both directions), so why doesn't rsync work? I even put a .pgpass file in the root of that user's directory with that user's password, and the user/password are identical on both servers.
I think the problem is rsync is not able to use the ssh key correctly. I tried adding this to my script but it didn't help.
SSH key issue
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 29, 2008
I am trying to setup ssh keys so that I do not need passwds to scp/ssh between systems. System nona-man is running CentOS4.5 and node1003 is running CentOS5.1.
I generate the keys for nona-man: ssh-keygen -t rsa
no passphrase. Then via kickstart copy nona-man's id_rsa, id_rsa.pub and authorized_keys (copy of id_rsa.pub) files to node1003:/root/.ssh. All root/.ssh dir/files have the permission 700/600, respectively. I can ssh as root into the node1003 from nona-man without a passwd ,but not the reverse. My /etc/sshd_config file is a default and unchanged. /etc/hosts.allow on nona-man allows ssh from the node1003. host.deny is ALL:ALL
nona sshd: ROOT LOGIN REFUSED FROM ::ffff:172.20.101.3 (node IP)
I do not want to allow root logins, as other nics are exposed to the outside world.
Below is the debug info from the node to nona-man.
One debug message seems strange to me: It is looking for rsa1 key...
NoMachines/FreeNX ssh key question
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 4, 2008
Hi all, I am running Ubuntu 7.10 and connecting to server from Windows XP client. Used dpkg to setup client, then node then server. Everything is running fine. However, I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on with the keys. I even enabled the DB in the server.cfg file and still get Authentication login failure. Here's the error I get in the Details of NX Client and when doing ./nxserver --useradd usrname

ssh key doesnt work.

I have trouble with ssh key.
auth.log is stating that authorized_keys arent regular file.
I have created the keys on the linux client
ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -f key_name
transfer the files to the remote box
scp -P xxxx file [email protected]
it didnt work.
on the remote box I chmod ~/.ssh 711, and for authorized_keys 600. I still had problems. I chmod ~/.700 ssh, it still didnt work.
It is still asking me for a password, instead of the passphrase.
I figured maybe the problem is due to my encrypted drive. I have put the keys under /etc/ssh/<username>/authorized_keys so it is described on the help sections, it still didnt work.
I have checked the auth.log file at both times. It states it is not regular file.
I have also tried ssh-keygen and created 2048 key, instead of 4096 and I still have the same problem.
