Change update server from command line
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 12, 2010
On Ubuntu Desktop editions, there is a GUI application which allows easily changing to a different server. It can even find out how one is the fastest update server.
Is there a corresponding command line tool available to do this? Because I'm using the Server edition without GUI. I hate to manually edit /etc/apt/source.list.

[SOLVED] Is it possible to add a ppa from Launchpad to 12.04 beta?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 1, 2012
Anyone had the problem of re-enabling a launchpad ppa that was from a current release up to the 12.04 beta releases of the new Ubuntu? I'm find this seems to be a problem is other distros that are in Alpha or Beta.
I've enabled the repo in Update Manager settings again now in 12.04 but again like always, when updating sources, it skips the ppa repo for Oneiric?
Is it just a matter of waiting for the developer to port it to the new release?
Connect to Wifi from Command Line only
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 13, 2011
I want to connect to my wifi from command line (not the one you enter from ALT+CTRL+F1, BUT the one you enter from Recovery Mode).
When I go to Recovery Mode --> Switch to room command line with networking
I use ethernet (eth0) I have no problems. And even if I plug the ethernet wire AFTER the login and then I run "sudo dhclient" I get the internet connection.
I want to connect to my wireless network it doesn't work.
I have tried with this (and many other) syntax:
sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode managed channel 6 key open <yourwepkeyhereifany> essid MyNet
sudo iwconfig wlan0 ap AA:BB:CCD:EE:22
sudo dhclient wlan0
I get something like this (I cope/pasted the result from another website. But the result it's this one)
Listening on LPF/eth0/00:20:e0:5e:2d:73
Sending on LPF/eth0/00:20:e0:5e:2d:73
Sending on Socket/fallback

Can't switch desktops / window managers in 12.04 precise
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 24, 2012
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) AMD64.
It used to be that if you installed multiple window managers/desktop environments, you could select them at the login screen. You could also choose multiple options for a given environment (like gnome).
I have installed several window managers, but I don't even see on the new login screen any kind of session options AT ALL. No place for them to even show up. On the left hand side there is a list of users to pick, and if you pick one you get a password field, but no option to change what desktop to use.
I've done a lot of searching but I can't find any site or forum post that explains how to fix this. This is how it was out of the box. It seems like Unity is being forced on me. I would like to go back to fvwm if I can, and I have it installed, but I can't choose anything at login.
Where is this supposed to be? I have looked under every nook and cranny of the login screen and see nothing there that even relates to this.

HowTo Find Your External IP Address From Command Line
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 31, 2010
Using this tip, you will get the correct external or outgoing IP address of your computer. Open a terminal window and enter this command in order to find out your External or Outgoing IP address:
dig myip.opendns.com @resolver1.opendns.com +short
Once executed, you will be shown your external IP address as the output. You need to be connected for this command to give you an output (quite obvious) Screenshots at: http://digitizor.com/2010/07/31/find...-command-line/
merge mkv files from command line
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 13, 2009
I have several mkv files that are all part of one movie, named pl.mkv.001, pl.mkv.002, etc, and I'm trying to merge one. However... only the first one plays in vlc/totem, etc, so how do I merge these? I tried installing mkvtoolnix and its gui, but when I add movies to the gui interface, they all come back corrupted, even the first one, which plays just fine. How do I merge these? Thanks!

Transferring files from Ubuntu server 12.04 LTS to Windows 7
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 21, 2013
Well, due to my computer not allowing me (for some reason) to download ubuntu desktop, I was stuck with ubuntu server.
Anyways, I need someone to help with transferring files to windows 7. I have saved a zip file (Backup.zip) in my home directory, and am trying to transfer it to the C: drive on my laptop. Problem is, whenever I look online for a guide, they either screw me over by destroying config files (like destroying the interfaces file, due to them having an older version of ubuntu server), or having complicated setup instructions.
Can someone help me? I have PuTTy, and the guides about file transferring with FileZilla make no sense. Yesterday alone, I had literally spend about 7 hours cooped up in an office trying to move this file... Help!
