tty in chroot env says "not a tty"
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 19, 2011
I'm currently trying to set up a chroot jail on my Fedora 15 machine.
I tried a minimal approach first only putting the necessary files in it. However, the tty command tells me "not a tty". I then tried adding hard links to all kinds of different system directories like /dev, /var, /etc, /tmp to it, but to no avail.
I even made the chroot directory a hard link to / but tty still tells me "not a tty". So what I'm getting, is that just hard linking the necessary directories and files doesn't do it.
What do I need to do to get a real tty in my chroot jail?

Error: JAVA_HOME is not defined correctly.

permission denied to /dev/null in chroot env
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 15, 2007
I'm preparing a Slack11 partition and having installed everything on it, I chroot into it because I want to do some compiling of stuff.
I verify that I am root with whoami, but I am denied permission to /dev/null which has permission setting crw-rw-rw-, so I can't understand it.
Under what circumstances can you be denied permission to a file/device if you are root? I know it's a chroot environment, but that shouldn't have any bearing on the permissions issue, I don't think. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Upstart env stanza not setting environment variables (like NODEENV) for Node.js application
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
I have an Upstart script for my server that looks like this:
description "myapp node.js server"
start on runlevel
stop on shutdown
exec sudo -u nodejs /usr/local/bin/node /opt/myapp/app.js >> /var/log/nodejs/myapp.log 2>&1
NODE_PID=`status myapp | egrep -oi '([0-9]+)$' | head -n1`
echo $NODE_PID > /var/run/nodejs/myapp.pid
However, the app doesn't see NODE_ENV set to production. In fact, if I console.log(process.env) within the app, I don't see NODE_ENV or CUSTOM. Any ideas what's happening?
By the way, NODE_ENV=production node app.js works just fine.
