Yes,
I have searched the Internet and this forum but haven't seen anything like the problem I have. Like a lot of other people I wanted to try Linux (on a Win 7 machine). I used to use UNIX in college a long time ago so I installed Ubuntu this May.
Anyway, I decided I didn't want to try it anymore and searched the Internet for a way to get rid of it. In one forum it said that all you need to do was to delete the partition. Well, I didn't think more of it so that's what I did and I now get the error a lot of others have gotten.
If I could I would change the boot order but I can't do that (I have a Dell Studio 1747). I try F2 to enter the BIOS set up, but I still end up with that error and never get to the setup. F12 doesn't work either (F12 is for the boot order) so I can't boot from the DVD with the Win7 installation DVD as the computer just freezes and I can't get past the Dell splash screen.
I have tried to remove the coin battery on the motherboard in an attempt to reset the BI

Getting "error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>" after Activating Windows 8
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 28, 2013
I'm fairly new to Xubuntu, though I have used Unix/Linux on and off in the past. I just setup Windows 8 and Xubuntu 13.04 to dual boot on a Dell XPS 13 (2013) Ultrabook.
The back story: I created a Dell Windows Recovery USB, removed the stock 128 GB SDD and replaced with a 480 GB SDD. Then installed Windows 8. Then installed Xubuntu 13.04. Apart from a "dimming" bug in Xubuntu, everything was working fine.
Given that I had now recovered Windows 8 onto a different SDD, I had to go through the Activation process. When I did that, I rebooted and got this:
error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue>
I've seen several posts about this online, but nothing clear enough to explain how I can fix this problem. I can boot into Xubuntu with the USB choosing "Try Xubuntu" option. I just need to know what to do next to repair the grub menu.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Dual Boot Problem error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 2, 2011
I had a dual boot system on a laptop with lubuntu and XP.
I wanted to remove lubuntu and replace it with linux mint. So I booted into the linux mint live CD and went through the first few steps of the install. I chose to erase lubuntu and install linux mint on top of it. After a few steps and in the middle of the install for no apparent reason the laptop's power went out!
Restarted and went into the live CD again but this time the menu for the install was different. Instead of offering me the choice of installing over lubuntu and keeping XP it offered me the choice of adding linux mint to the mix (I don't want to erase my XP install or documents).
At this point I wanted to just uninstall lubuntu so I quit the linux mint installation and restarted to go into windows and erase the lubuntu partition from there.
But I was met with:
Code:
error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue>
woah!
My goal is to remove the linux distros. Either by booting into windows X

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04. I do not have any other os installed. I recieved an update notice today. After the updates installed the system rebooted to show...
error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue:
I am a shiny new user to linux and do not understand ityet. I have read multiple forums on how to resolve the issue. I am not able to get the computer to boot past the grub rescue prompt. I have tried to boot from the ubuntu disk, with no success. The prompt still shows up. A lot of the commands that are stated in many forums are "unknown commands" I have tried booting from rescue mode. "ls" is a good command and displayed my devices fine. "search" is an unknown command. "set" is a good command. set root is a good command. ls /boot results in a response of "unknown filesystem" any help is appreciated.

Thinkpad R61 Laptop with Vista got the BSOD
I pulled the hard drive and replaced with a new Hard drive, 60GB SSD -
On this drive installed
Ubuntu 10.04 - No other operating systems exist on this disk
Everything installed fine and the machine restarted into the OS
Everything works fine (web, games, office, ect.) until after 1 restart.
After 1 restart laptop halts startup after bios on the following error message
Error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue>
I have checked the BIOS - everything is Kosher
I have replaced the CMOS battery
Currently downloading the newest version of Ubuntu (currently 11.10) to see if that changes anything but have my doubts
Any thoughts I'm stumped - if this is software it shouldn't boot the first time at all.
If it's hardware it should just plain not be booting...Right?
