[SOLVED] error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue> (how can I use window 7 again??)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 22, 2012
Hello I'm new to this OS "backtrack 5"
recently I installed BT5 (backtrack 5) on my laptop dual boot with window 7.Today I want to remove BT5 out off my laptop so I use Aomei Partition program to delete a partition where I installed BT5 and I merge it to drive D: (normally I use C: as window 7 and D: for storage data) the partition program ask me to reboot the window to perform the task (merge partition),Then when my laptop boot up it ask me to select OS between BT5 and window 7 as usually when I boot my laptop. After I select window 7,partition program begin to merge the partition. While in progress the error occur and show this message
error: unknown filesystem
How can I fix this problem? and continue using window 7 ??

After replacing my entire Windows 7 OS with Ubuntu 10.04 on my Asus G73S, I've decided I want to dual-boot between the two. But after running the Windows Restore/Recovery Image (6 DVDs http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80304796/b1.jpg ), I get "Error: Unknown filesystem grub rescue" ( http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80304796/b3.jpg ). Any suggestions?
For what it's worth, here are my boot choices ( http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80304796/b2.jpg ) and here is what "sudo fdisk -l" returns...

I installed Ubuntu over XP and deleted the partition ..so only Ubuntu was my OS. I don't have a network connection at this time and working with wireless only...
Anyways...after installing Ubuntu I have no wireless...looks good but wireless option is shaded...
I have Ubuntu recovery DVD.
So now I figured maybe I should put windows XP back so I did recovery and it said recovery complete restart your computer..so After I restart I get the message...error: unknown filesystem.grub rescue message..
If I can get either of the issues fixed whichever is easier...but at this moment windows is on just can't get to it..Any support would be greatly appreciated...I am new to Ubuntu but wouldn't mind having dual boot..thank in advance..

my computer is unable to boot and i am getting an error like "Error: unknown filesystem" and dropping to grub rescue.
i searched from the internet and found some solutions like booting from a live CD and reinstalling the GRUB.
I am trying to boot from live CD and USB ,unfortunately my computer does not boots from live CD or USB either .
grub rescue> ls
(hd0) (hd0,msdos7) (hd0,msdos6) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos1)
i don't know what to do, neither fresh reinstall nor live CD works. Please help!!!

Hi, I a have dual boot with Linux Mint and Windows 7. Today, after using Partition Wizard on Windows to extend its partition, I got the following message when rebooting:
error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue> _
I was trying to delete linux be extending the Windows partition over it. I had been playing around with Linux just for fun, but I was running out of space for windows. (I allocated 60 out of 300 GB for Linux) I have no experience with Linux at all, and this is a family computer so I would really appreciate any easy to understand replies. Thanks!

this is my first post, hope I make myself clear enough for you guys to help
I got a new laptop Dell Inspiron 15R 3521 which comes with windows8 built in.
I managed to install and use Ubuntu 13.04 for my academic work, by disabling UEFI secure boot feature every time I have to login to Ubuntu.
It has been working well for a few weeks now.
Now am not able to boot in to Ubuntu. it just shows a black screen with this message on it.
Error : unknown filesystem.
grub rescue> ls
is giving me a list of drives and partitions.
but ls (drive, partition)/
sn't opening any directories of Ubuntu.
Win8 s working perfectly fine.
Kindly let me know what more details you guys require to help as I am totally new to Linux environment.
Kinda urgent guys (stuck in the middle of my internship)
Thanks in advance guys.

Have installed Tryton from Ubuntu 12.04 software center now what?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 10, 2013
I would like to make a clean break from Windows and the only thing preventing me from doing so is Quickbooks Pro -- which I use for my business. I am attempting to install Tryton to see if I can migrate my accounting package.
I have installed all of the modules found in the Ubuntu software center, but have stalled there. I attempted to follow the instructions on Tryton website for "Setup and Start" but got nowhere.
Setup a Database and User System
$ sudo su postgres -c "createuser --createdb --no-adduser -P tryton"
$ sudo useradd tryton
came back as bad command.
I am hoping someone can provide a newbie some clear steps to follow to begin to use Tryton to see if it would be a suitable alternative for Quickbooks Pro.
