Do you think there would be a significant difference in speed between Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Puppy?
448.1 MHz (I think! That number showed up on a tool in DBAN)
Ubuntu on a 512MB RAM PC
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 19, 2012
I was just looking at the requirements to run Ubuntu and noticed that at a minimum, you need 512MB RAM
Is there an older, supported version of Ubuntu that might run on 512MB of RAM as I would like to get it going on an older machine for surfing the Internet.

I want to know what other users experienced ( like sound , video , wireless problems).

location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 27, 2008
I have a pc with an AMD duron 1.3ghz processor and 512mb of ram.
When i use the ubuntu live cd (8.04) and select live cd mode, the splash screen comes up followed by cli text.
Busy box v 1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) built-in shell (ash)
Enter "help" for a list of built-in commands.
this appears to be a command prompt of ash. I tried "help" but this just gave me the built in ash commands (eg. echo, exit, export, rmdir, mkdir)
how can I boot off the live cd without this happening?
P.S i tried to install ubuntu from the main menu and the same occours.
Ubuntu 9.10 so sluggish on 512mb ram AMD athlon 1.8GHZ
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 1, 2010
Why is Ubuntu 9.10 so sluggish with 512mb ram and amd athlon64 1.8Ghz..!!!!!!!
The previous release 9.04 is so beautiful ,it ran so well without stucking . Can u imagine i used to run DeVeDe(dvd creating), firefox browser and at the same time Transmission simultaneously on 9.04 moreover compiz turned on.
The problem is it stucks in mouse clicks and on opening new applications and it has become mem hungry than the previous version of it?
I can also tell you that alot of processes are running .
What do i have to do now ? This computer is used by the whole family .
I either have to switch to Xubuntu which i "dont like" at all or any other distro ( gnome based) .
Thanks In Advance
Ubuntu variant for VAIO VGN AR250G with 512MB RAM
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 13, 2013
I'm currently booting up frugally some small linux distributions at this laptop, mainly Puppies. I want to know really two things:
1) What Ubuntu Studio contains in the case it can run at this laptop?;
2) Can I use the same method for booting up the Ubuntu variant I finally choose?
I'm using grub4dos as a boot loader. My HDD is partitioned in three different partitions: sda1, sda2 & sda5 with a swap partition already there. Have plenty of room at sda1 partition (intended target for Ubuntu).
Even though I might burn a cd with the selected iso file that's not the intended way for using Ubuntu.
The reason I'm asking about Ubuntu Studio is because I've Puppy Studio & I like some of the software included there & think it's based on Ubuntu Studio (an old version of it), so the latest stable release might be even better.
As an extra, I would like to know if, once the selected release is installed and running well, if there's the possibility of adding say some apps from Edubu

EDIT: Don't worry, I've found one that looks good: LXDE.
Although, tell me if you know of any others
I have an old Dell optiplex with 512MB RAM and a 2.8GHz Pentium 4. Right now it has windows XP installed however I'm considering switching it to Linux. If I was to do that, I'd probably choose Arch as the distro, but what desktop environment do you recommend for these specs?

distro advice for p3 500 w/ 512mb ram
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 1, 2005
im currently looking for a distro that would run fast and reliably on a relatively old computer (p3 550, 512mb ram) hdd space is not an issue. I need a distro that is fairly easy to use.. don't mind editing the occasional config file as long as i don't spend all my time doing it.
It would be mainly used for the web and IM as well as music (decent program 4 mp3s?)
As well as a distro, im looking for a good, fast, cool looking window manager. Iv heard alot of good things about fluxbox - does anyone out there have any comments (good and bad) about it?
Specs of the computer:
512mb pc133 ram
2 x 20gig hdd, 1 x 40gig - i have about 50 gig free
geforce tnt2 32mb + an older pci card for use with a second monitor (not essential)
Any help/ advice is much apreciated
