Need Help with Ubuntu [Black Screen]
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 27, 2013
I just installed Ubuntu, on my HP computer. I used a disk, and I downloaded Ubuntu and followed all the instructions. When I rebooted my computer, I was greeted by a black and white screen which read these options:
- Try Ubuntu without installing
- Install Ubuntu
- Check disk for defects
I clicked "Install Ubuntu". For a while, I had a completely black screen. After about 15 minutes of waiting, I decided to turn my computer off and try again. This next time I clicked "Try Ubuntu without installing", same luck. I clicked "Check disk" and I received the screen I was hoping for, but it just checked my disk and returned me to this black and white screen. I am not too familiar with computer hardware and software as I'm more of a design person on my computer, so please excuse the amount of questions I will ask.
Ubuntu black screen after start up
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 26, 2012
I just installed Ubuntu two days ago, and had no problems. it wasn't until yesterday that I started to have issues. I was checking to see if any of my drivers needed updating, and my Nvidia graphics cared had a lot of things to either update or activate. After activating one of the drivers and installing it I got prompt to restart my computer. Upon restart everything starts up correctly when I click to use my Linux instead of Vista (I partitioned Linux with my Windows Vista) the whole screen goes black and I see nothing but I do hear a noise meaning I am on the login screen and it's only my screen that is not being displayed. If someone could help me with this it would be great, I have looked at few other fourms with people that had similar issues.

[ubuntu] black screen and cursor only after log in
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 25, 2014
Worked until today. Restarted computer and now my desktop is a black screen, no icons, and all i have is the cursor.
I AM able to log in with the guest account and view everything fine.
When I run unity, I get
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keycompiz (core) - Fatal : couldn't open display :0
unity --reset gives me a warning/error.
Any help on how to fix this? Doesn't seem to be a drivers issue. Again, I'm able to get the log in screen and full function of the guest account.
Ubuntu Black screen?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 12, 2010
Hello, I've been trying to try the demo of Ubuntu and just entering the disc alone does not help.
After learning the shortcut F6, I used it when I entered the Ubuntu disc, and I was able to access a menu.
I selected the first choice try without installing, and after two or three minutes I hear a song, I'm guessing that means it's working.
However, that shortcut I've heard on the forums ALT+CTRL+F1 does not work, and it seems like my keyboard itself does not work with Ubuntu, and my screen is black and cannot see anything.
ubuntu : black screen on startup

i have a lenovo Y330 laptop with ati radeon graphics card. i have been running ubuntu on it for 1 month, and it's been working fine. however, since yesterday, whenever I boot up, it works fine , everything loads perfectly until it reaches the point where the login screen should be appearing. instead, i see a black screen, with only the cursor( the very same cursor which appears just before login) with a busy sign. im able to login to text mode. some people suggested me to change some stuff in the xorg.conf file, but it has been unsuccessful so far. please help me out..
Ubuntu Black Screen After Suspend [duplicate]
location: linuxexchange.com - date: April 2, 2012
My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?
I used Ubuntu with no problems and I upgraded to 11.10 and everything was fine.
But when I did my first suspend I was not able to boot again, all I got was a black screen no bios screen, nothing just blank, I tried doing hard reset but when I power on again same happens.
I tried ctrl+alt+delete F1-F12 but i think the keyboard is not working, also tried booting from CD but all I got was blank screen, the hard disk light is not blinking at all so i'm assuming it's not trying to boot.
My laptop is Toshiba satellite with ATI Radeon graphics.
Hibernate was working fine though.
I searched the net for solutions but with no luck.
Ubuntu Black Screen on ResumeAfterLidClose
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 4, 2015
I have my ASUS K55A Laptop set to "no hibernate to disk" only "suspend to RAM". However, after I close the laptop lid, I still get a black screen. The weird thing is sometimes, after a hard reboot, on the first resume-after-lid-close it DOES resume, however on the second resume-after-lid-close I get a black screen. Also, there are times when I have a YouTube movie playing, and on a resume-after-lid-close which gives me a black screen I can hear the YouTube video playing ("behind" the black screen). I am not using an external monitor.
