Change hostname without restart?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 20, 2010
As the thread title says: Is there any way to change the hostname without rebooting the machine?
As far as I've searched the internet, I've got the solution only for fedora but it's quite different from ubuntu. The rest is the same everywhere:
Change in /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts and reboot but I'd like to avoid the rebooting.
Is there a way to dynamically change hostname to ip address mapping in linux (without having to restart)?

In a linux system, I suppose you can configure hostname to IP address mapping in /etc/hosts, but I guess if you change the mapping for a particular hostname, you would have to restart for the change to take effect.
Is there a way to dynamically (without restarting) change the mapping of a hostname to a different IP address?

How to change hostname in ubuntu 10.10 (aka Maverick Meerkat)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 12, 2010
Hey guys,
I went through some tutorial in which they say to change oldhostname, replace newhostname throughout /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts files. and then finally stop and start /etc/init.d/hostname.sh service.
But when I try to execute /etc/init.d/hostname.sh stop.
It says hostname.sh was not found. And that script does no exist there. So how to change the hostname permanently?

Your ubuntu desktop crash or you make some changes in Ubuntu Desktop that require restarting the X Server. To restart the Xserver without rebooting we usually use the key combination Ctrl + Alt + Backspace. but, Since Ubuntu 9.04, this key combination has been disabled by default, to eliminate the problem of accidentally triggering the restart.

Ethernet fails after a few minutes on ubuntu 10.10 ?? can't reactivate without restart
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 27, 2011
I just got a new Toshiba Satellite C650 and set it up to dual boot Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7. Ubuntu will be my primary OS, but I'm having a weird problem with wired ethernet: when plugged into my home LAN, ethernet works fine on startup, but eventually fails. When it fails, I can't restart it -- not by disconnecting/reconnecting the cable, playing with options in the network manager, or running /etc/init.d/networking restart.
Some other symptoms:
No trouble at all in Windows 7.
The problem seems to happen more frequently when other devices (e.g. my other laptop) are also using the modem. None of the other devices has this problem though.
A side note: at the moment, wireless isn't working at all, but I plan to cross that bridge later -- unless it turns out to be a related problem.

Change hostname and add other users on Ec2

I've recently been playing around with Ubuntu on Amazon Ec2. One thing that bugs me is the default host names it gives your instances.
Is it permissible to change the hostname of your instance? Are there any negative consequences? How does adding users work with the certificate based authentication?
I've never used cert based authentication before, I've been told it's more secure. If I add a user
Code:
useradd dude
Does he login using the same cert or do I have to generate a cert for each user?
