Windows 7 with Ubuntu : Error incompatible license Grub rescue
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 9, 2012
I work on windows 7 but I needed linux for my studies so I installed it on a partition of my hard disc.
Yesterday I downloaded an update of Ubuntu and in the evening I realized that my computer could neither start on Windows nor on Ubuntu.
When I start it, I see the usual first screen on which I can press "F2" for Setup, and then I have a black screen with :
"Error incompatible license
written on it.
I read on some forums that some people already had this kind of problem but contrary to my, they were used to linux and I did not really understand what things like a "boot" are.
The thing is that the files I want to rescue are on Windows, if I need to delete Ubuntu from my pc, it is not a problem (I would like to be able to use again the partition one what I installed Ubuntu if it is possible.)
A friend's dad thinks it is a problem linked with the "Master Boot Record" but he was'nt here to solve the problem, so i
Completely new to ubuntu, need help with error: out of disk grub rescue issue

I have just attempted to install Ubuntu 10.10 onto an old Sony Vaio laptop, (sorry I do not know the model off hand).
I followed this process:
Downloaded ubuntu iso and burned to dvd as per ubuntu website instructions
Booted laptop from optical drive and followed instructions to install just ubuntu on whole of hard drive, followed prompts all the way to restart computer.
Ejected dvd with iso image on and restarted the laptop
I am not familiar with how ubuntu should start up, so not sure whether the raindrop screen is a loading screen or startup screen or whatever.
Anyway, after the animation faded to an all black screen, the computer seemed to get stuck, their was no prompt or button or login, etc.
So I turned off laptop and tried again.
This time the computer displayed a stream of error things (white text on black background)
before displaying this prompt
error: out of disk
I have absolutely no idea what to do now, I have tried searching the forums and google but to
Can't boot! error: out of disk grub rescue>

I'm running a dual-boot of Ubuntu 9.10 and Vista on my MSI VR440X. I used my laptop this morning and everything was working fine. But I just got home and turned on the laptop and it won't boot! I get:
GRUB loading (as usual)
but after that I get:
error: out of disk.
I even tried booting from an Ubuntu CD. I boots, but any option I choose gives me a black screen with nothing but a _ as if I have to type a command or something. I know it can't possibly mean I'm out of disk space; I had plenty left. Besides, it all worked perfectly this morning. In fact, I didn't even run Ubuntu this morning, I used Vista! I anyone could help me I would really appreciate it. By the way, I'm a total newb when it comes to command prompts and whatever... Anyway, thx!

I've just installed Ubuntu 11.10 after wiping Window XP off my lappy. I installed it from a iso burned onto a CD and have just restarted after a successful installation. Now when I boot up I get the error shown in the thread title.
When it comes to problems like this I am a COMPLETE noob so I need the simplest solution possible to tackle this problem.
I've read all sorts of answers and from what I gather it might relate to my hard drive, but like I said I know close to sod all on these things.
Can anyone help?
2.13GHz Pentium M
Installed 10.04 Error: out of disk GRUB Rescue
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 15, 2011
I hope someone can help me out here. A quick background:
I have an older laptop, P4 2.4ghz, 1GB memory, 160gb hard drive. I installed Windows XP Pro first, then decided to dual boot, so I installed 10.04, choosing manual partitioning as I always have. Shrunk Windows down to 130gb, created a 8gb (I forgot how much memory I have so I went WAY overboard) swap file and the 32gb remaining I made ext4 and mount point "/".
After installation, I went to do the reboot. It comes up real quick to a screen that just says:
Error: Out of disk space
I'd *really* like to get past this without losing my partitions, as I have a ton of hours into installing Windows, doing the update to SP3, all the updates since, plus all the drivers, etc.. So, I'd like to know what the error means, and of course I'd like to know how to get around the problem.
Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone I have a little experience with Ubuntu 9.04 from a few years ago. I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old desktop box that has WinXP already installed. The installation went smoothly however when the machine rebooted I received the following error. Error: out of disk grub rescue> The cursor blinks however I'm unable to type anything. Is this a problem with grub? I have searched quite a bit however am unable to figure this out. I was able to get a results.txt which I have attached. Thanks in advance Rockwell56

Please Help !
I have been struggling with this situation for the past week and am at my wits end !!!
I am using an old computer that previously worked fine with ubuntu:
Motherboard= MSI KT4 Ultra
CPU= AMD 2200+
Video Card= AGP
Hard drive was 2tb hard drive from Western Digital
Model: caviar green wd20ears 64mb cache
It worked fine for months on this computer but was using an updated version (11.10)
which i didn't like so i formatted it and used the drive for something else.
So I then recently bought a new drive for this computer :
2tb hard drive from Western Digital
Model: caviar green wd20earx 64mb cache
The difference is this drive is sata 3
Everytime i install ubuntu 10.04 on it,
the installation goes well if i skip the RAID setup from the BIOS
What I mean by that is that Ubuntu cannot install on my new drive if my new drive is part of a RAID setup as requested by the BIOS.
But then if i reboot, my BIOS cannot see my drive until i
error out of disk grub rescue

I'm getting an out of disk error and grub rescue prompt.
It started with an update. I have to unplug my windows HDD if the mbr is being updated or it screws up my mbr. I can usually fix the problem because it loads to the grub prompt. I just do a manual boot and update the grub. However the update somehow corrupted my 2.6.32-23-generic header and I had to delete that header and revert back to 32.22-generic. Now I'm getting that out of disk error.
So I am running ubuntu lucid 10.04 on its own hard drive. sda1 is where my boot sector is located. sda2 is extended and sda5 is my swap and root is (hd0,1).
At the rescue prompt I put in the following commands:
I get expected results all the way up to the last command. After I press enter I get "Error: out of disk". What does that mean and how do I go about fixing the problem?
I am able to get everything running using a super grub
