Ubuntu for Mac iBook G4
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 1, 2012
I have an old iBook G4 and would like to pass it down to my daughter to play games and watch videos on Youtube. Is there a Linux system that can play Flash on this machine?
Machine Model: iBook G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Number of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.2 GHz
L2 Cache: 512 KB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.8.7f1
I'm not experienced at all with anything Linux, but have seen recommendations that Ubuntu, Debian, Yellow Dog and Mint PPC would be my workable options.
A direct download link (not sure if I have to get a certain version due to the iBook's age) would be greatly! appreciated as well as input about being able to use Flash.
Thanks (and sorry if I'm on the wrong website or forum to post my request).

hello, I was thinking of installing ubuntu 7.04 on a partition that I would make in disk utility.
So I would choose the partition that I made and install ubuntu on it, but because it is a powerpc, will the computer see both partitions at start up if I hold down the option key?
I'm doing this on a ibook g4 1.33Ghz 1.5gb ram
installing ubuntu 10.1 on mac ibook G4
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 10, 2011
So for christmas i got a used ibook G4 with OS 10.4.11 from my aunt. I have now decided that i would like to experiment with ubuntu since many of my friends use it and love it. I have gotten a version of 10.1 that is supposed to be formatted for use on PPC (a friend got it for me so i have no idea where it came from) and after checking the files in it that appears to be correct. However, I have not yet gotten it to install.
I have the .iso saved to my hard drive and can access that at any time and I have partitioned my 4gig flash drive to be evenly spaced with the first have being formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the second half is formatted to MS-DOS File System (FAT32), and have copied all the files and folders (including hidden stuff) to the first half of the flash drive. My original plan was to boot from the flash drive, but I realized very quickly that this is either not possible or very difficult. I would like to be able to simply run ubuntu alongside or temporari
How to Install Only Ubuntu On iBook G4?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 13, 2010
I'm trying to install ubuntu on an old iBook G4. I have two cds (9.10 (not PPC specific) and 8.04.1 (the PPC specific version)) along with the G4 install cds. I've tried booting while holding down C, and I've tried to boot holding down option. When the boot menu comes up it does not recognize either one. I've also reset the PRAM.
I've read a lot of guides, and look through this very thoroughly. I don't even want to dual boot, just Ubuntu.
So how can I get Ubuntu to install on this old iBook? Thanks!

Ubuntu won't boot past splash screen on new iBook G4 install
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 20, 2013
I have been trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 PowerPC on an iBook G4. The install appears to go fine but on booting into the new OS the screen gets to the Splash screen where is says Ubuntu 12.04 with four dots below but it also give an error message [ 25.979435] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found.
It says to go to a website and download the firmware. Unfortunately the screen and all of the keys are locked. Reboot doesn't help. Any help would be appreciated.
Ubuntu 10.10 PPC Mac Cube G4 Display Problems
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 22, 2011
Maybe someone can help me out here..
I decided to give Ubuntu 10.10 a shot to see if it would display on my Mac Cube.
I tried the LiveCD with no joy at all due to display issues where the display wouldn't work except for the initial boot. So I moved on to the alternate installer which I was able to install (since it's a real basic display) and to some extent get up and running.
So here is my problem. I cannot at all run X-Windows on the Mac Cube I have. I have tried:
- Recreating the xorg.conf file - automatically from the menu in 10.10
- Recreating the xorg.conf file - via command line when I drop into "netroot" terminal
I have researched the various options that people have spoken about on these forums and other places. It seems like I am running out of options to be able to use Linux on my Cube.
My present set-up from a hardware perspective is:
- Mac Cube G4 PPC 450
- 1 GB RAM
- 32 Mb Video Card (I don't remember which one)
- 17" A

hello world from the north i have over the years aquiered several old macbooks that i hope to resurect/ swich over to linux, the most promising of them is an old ibook g4 A154 with PPC processor @ 1064 Mhz and 512 MB ram with a 40 GB HDD and slot loading drive, now i just need the right distro and version and how to instructions that i find the ubuntu forums are oh so good at providing to keep us out of the hands of apple and microsoft.
Cheers and thanks!
P.S. anything that is close enough to the ubuntu desktop that one might install on a PC nowdays using the ubuntu environment would be fine, not to say that i couldent use something else though, just my personal preference.
ibook g4 ubuntu?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 26, 2012
Hola, Im thinking of getting a ibook g4 ppc just because I think they're nice and they're relatively cheap now.
I'll be getting the 12" model with the 1.3ghz ppc. Having 1.5gb of ram and adding a 160GB 7200 rpm pata drive.
What im really curious about is just the general performance I should expect out of the machine running the last ubuntu.
Is this is the best linux distro for this job?
Also how well will wine be able to run some older games on the hardware. Thinking around Unreal Tournament 1 level old.
