Any difference between Ubuntu Minimal install vs. Arch Linux install?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 2, 2010
Hello. I'm fairly new to the Linux world. I'm looking into building a lightweight system with either dwm or Openbox as my WM. I've tried using Arch to build a system, but I'm wondering if there are any differences using Ubuntu's minimal install cd and building an Openbox system.
ubuntu minimal install vs arch
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 11, 2010
1.I was wondering WHY arch is so fast?
2.Can the minimal install + Xorg + Some other useful stuff be as fast as arch?
3.If yes please tell me the light weight equivalents to what Iam using right now.
4.I ONLY have a wireless connection. Is it likely to be a problem? (In jaunty it works out-of-the-box)

Ubuntu 7 install
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 8, 2007
I recently had a problem with Ubuntu 6 sign in and decided to format hard drive and install Ubuntu 7. For the most part the install went as expected until I rebooted. I removed the CD and changed the BIOS back to boot from HDD. As the comp boots up I get get:
Verifying DMI Pool Data.......
GRUB Loading stage 1.5.
GRUB loading, please wait
That is as far as I get. I reformatted the drive and installed again and again this is as far as I get. Any suggestions for someone whi is Linux challenged?
GRUB hard disk error on fresh ubuntu RAID install
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 28, 2008
Clean install of Gutsy Server, set up partitions manually for softwareRAID like so:
Drive 1: auto partitioned into 2 partitions, root and swap
drive 2: same as drive one
changed all 4 partitions to "use as physical volume for RAID"
disks 3 and 4: one partition, use for RAID.
set up RAID as RAID1, 3 different devices: 1 for root, 1 for swap(disks 1 and 2), 1 for home (on disks 3 and 4)
went back to partitioner, set raid device 1, which happened to be the home partition, to mount as /home
set raid device 2 to mount as /
set raid device 3 to mount as swap
wrote changes to disk, finished installation, and got the "GRUB hard disk error"
I know from googling that this means grub can't map the disk geometry, which isn't very suprising.
Booted into knoppix and both RAID devices are there, and root has all the stuff in it it's supposed to have.
Did i do something wrong? possibly RAIDing the swap is wrong? What do i do next?

Please Help!! Ubuntu Alternate Install
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 30, 2006
Hi people, I'm new to linux and have decided to use Ubuntu. However, I found difficulties in installing this to my laptop. It's an old Toshiba P3-1 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HD, a broken floppy, a broken CDROM , a working USB & a working LAN port.
It's going to be long as I try to explain my difficulties as detail as possible to get help from seniors here. and thank you very much if someone could help me out also sorry for my bad english as it's not my daily language.
Based on the situation above, I decided to download a .iso of Ubuntu 6.0.6 alternate because I want to install Ubuntu from a local partition of FAT32 as the HD is structured as :
1. Primary 20 GB - FAT32 - Windows XP & Windows 98 system file, so I got two options in my windows boot loader, one to directly go to Windows XP, and 2 for going to C:\ prompt
2. another 20 GB I left this unpartitioned (supposed to be used by ubuntu)
And below are the steps:
1. place the ubuntu-6.06-alternat
