IDEA: Ubuntionary, the Ubuntu dictionary! t help beginners and everyone else.

How about we have a thread containing dictionary style definitions of words that pop up often, but we can't expect beginners/n00bs to understand? Some more experienced users might learn something from this too.
As an example:
Ubuntu: n A free, open-source operating system built around the Linux Kernel and using entirely free software wherever possible. Developed by people around the world, the concept for this particular Distribution began with multi-millionaire Mark Shuttleworth. It is now a well advanced OS and a new version is released every 6 months. Canonical is Ubuntu's commercial sponsor and provides support to paying customers. Ubuntu is available for free download from www.ubuntu.com and has free active user community support at ubuntuforums.org. a An African (Zulu?) word meaning 'I am who I am because of who we all are' and 'Humanity to others'.
Other things we could define here are Linux commands and free programs, with descriptions of what each one is/does. Having it
Dual boot Joli OS & Win7 Will Ubuntu help bring GRUBback
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 15, 2011
I have added a Jolicloud installation (Joli OS 1.2 from iso file flashed to a pen drive) this morning to work along with Windows 7 Starter as a dual boot. (Actually, doing so I have overwritten a Natty installation hoping for a better support of Intel GMA500 on my netbook). Here comes my headache:
The system always boots straight to Joli OS. No GRUB in sight. Natty was booting fine with GRUB and Win7. I guess after Joli OS GRUB has appeared once at the very first start and then never again.
The general problem seems Grub is given no time to make the OS selection. I came across quite a number of very similar cases with Win XP users. They were able to recover their dual boot by patching boot.ini. But Win 7 has no boot.ini.
What I've been thinking so far is
Can I do anything to Grub's config (sudo gedit /etc/default/grub) ?
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 is already set ..
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 0r =10 doesn't change anything.
Would another installation of Ubuntu (replacing Joli OS or alongside it)

I like to play IPX games with Ubuntu since windows 7 no longer supports it.
I want to set up my IPX profile on startup with the terminal on boot-up but I can't find any good help on it.
Here is what I have to do:
I already installed IPX
apt-get install ipx
and every time I want to start it I have to add the profile and run this in the terminal
sudo modprobe ipx
sudo ipx_interface add -p wlan0 802.2

location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 20, 2010
Tired of Windows I downloaded and installed Ubuntu about a week ago... so far it has been great, I have been playing around with it non-stop.... obviously I am completely new to linux... Anyways I had not had a problem until now...
I downloaded one of my fav. TV series using transmission... all the files are .avi
I can't watch any of them... I tried everything... VLC does not work... when I tried playing any of the files using VLC it doesn't show any images... just sound and a blank screen... I have installed all the VLC updates, divx codecs etc etc... done everything I have gather from the internet and all the forums...
My question is... Is there really a way to watch .avi files on ubuntu or should I just give up and delete them from my computer... if so is there a way to download torrents and watch them on Ubuntu
Thanks a lot
Yelp crash (Ubuntu Help crashes) Precise 12.04 fresh install
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 8, 2012
Testing a fresh install of Precise 12.04 , Ubuntu Help (yelp) keeps crashing.
Click on the Help button and a Desktop Help (Ubuntu Desktop Guide) dialog box opens, it starts to load for a couple of seconds, then disappears.
Click on Help in an application (e.g. Gnome Configuration Editor) Help loads but crashes when I click 'Next Page' button.
There's a Crash Report in var/crash/_usr_bin_yelp.1000.crash that states 'The application Help has closed unexpectedly'.
Can't open the Crash Report in gedit! It opens in its own application. Can't send Crash report in Precise 12.04 ; was able to send Crash Report using Lucid 10.04.
Anyone else have this problem? How do I find the cause of this problem or how to fix it?

Hello all, I'm a brand new user to Ubuntu, but loving every minute of it!
I am single booting ubuntu 9.10 (vista is installed but not working right now)
I have 4 physical drives:
2x 73gig in raid -- correctly mounted (windows install on this raid)

Will Ubuntu Help Me?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 24, 2007
OK I'm extremely agitated right now! I have Windows Vista and the only reason I really use it is because the game developers support it. I hate it! I'm playing one game, Supreme Commander, and it plays like ****! I'm running that game on my laptop which has a dual core AMD Turion 2.0 GHz processor, 2 Gigs of ram and 3 Gigs of virtual memory, and it has a 256 mb graphics card but I always find myself turning the graphics all the way down and cutting th sound to finish a game on an average size map. My friends have this game as well on thier laptops, they don't have dual cores since theirs is older. They can play it just fine! They have XP and I have Vista. What the **** is vista doing to take up half of my processing power and my ram?!
What i'd like to know is can I play this game in Linux. I'm trying Ubuntu out on my second laptop but please tell my I can play this on Linux and that it runs smoothly. Is there a way to play my other games? I cannot stand Vista, it crashed on me thr
Ubuntu help needed
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 25, 2008
Just yesterday, I finished downloading and burning my first ever live Ubuntu CD (and I love it). I have a few problems though.
1.I have it partially installed, where I don't need the CD itself, but it still counts it as a live session. Every time I shut down the computer, it deletes any changes I've made. (New users created, preferences, Fire Fox add ons Etc.) I was wondering if there was any way to get it to save all of this stuff without actually installing it (unless there is a way to partition my drive without losing data, in which case please tell me how).
2.Ubuntu is running incredibly slow. I have a decent PC (2.5 GHz pentium 4, 1 GB RAM, don't know which kind, and an OK graphics card) but Ubuntu takes a long time to do even a simple task. I hit print screen, and it took about 20 seconds before Ubuntu brought up the dialogue asking what I wanted to save the screen shot as. XP runs way better. Is this just because I have a live cd? Will it work better if I instal
HP MI Edition Ubuntu help Inspiron 1525
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 8, 2009
I donwloaded the HP MI Edition and installed it on my Dell inspiron 1525, and everything works perfectly except I have no audio, and in the add/remove software section it apparently only allows software on the HP servers to be installed and I want to add the repos from the normal ubuntu 8.10 archives. Is there any way I can do this? I have never added repos before. I can use the synaptic package manager, but I still would really like to have the original repos, and I definatly need audio.
