Where to start?! Erase Hard Drive. Install Ubuntu.

First of all, I'm a complete linux virgin.

*Software kit Modem Series - drivers, manual, bvrp CD
Windows XP to Ubuntu
Basically, my main desktop needs to be euthanized, as I've seen it try to eat itself 3 times, right before my eyes. (This was even after an attempted reformat. Not sure why but it failed, all of my documents remained right there on my computer.) It was custom built by my cousin, who is no where around. I've tinkered with the insides a few time (more ram, fan, power supply, etc), but my IQ drops 20 points once you start talking about programs.
I considered a new hard drive, but would rather wait until I can afford to rebuild the entire system myself the way I want. (Slow, but determined).
So, my first question is: how do I completely erase my hard drive to prepare it for it's first installation of linux?
My second question is about the drivers and so forth. Aside from Nero and a DVD program, th
Completely erase hard drive(s) ALL partitions for fresh Ubuntu Install

Dear Users, Gurus, and Gods, (technical symptoms at bottom)
Mission Statement: Completely erase all hard drives/partitions/recovery partitions/BIOs and install fresh copy of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. So that is my question, is there a tool or method to safely and completely erase everything, thereby wiping out any possibility of a virus surviving?
See below for all details..
I seek your help today for an issue I have been battling for the last 8 hours and am about to resume tomorrow. I'll try to keep it short and sweet.. but I'm keeping in as many details as I can in case someone knows the issue specifically.
I am working on a laptop for my Korean friend and tutor. It is an LG which is about 5 years old and purchased in Korea. Initially she had a pirated copy of Windows 7 Ultimate K, then pirated Windows 8 Pro from halloweenpsycho (and I digress, I'm not trying to promote pirated software in any way). Anyway.. everything was working very well until last Thursday when she texted

Install Ubuntu on an external hard drive
I tried Ubuntu from a Live CD and I was really impressed. I really want to install it now and play with it and slowly convert to it. The problem is, I don't have too much empty space on my laptops hard drive. I have about 20GB of space left. I want to do one of two things:
1. Install Ubuntu on an external hard drive and have it run off of that. Has anyone done this and if you have, did you notice and noticeable performance bottlenecks due to the USB/Firewire interface?
2. I can also add a partition to my hard drive for all my personal data, install Ubuntu on the same hard drive, and have both Windows and Ubuntu share the same personal files off of the new partition. This way I can go back and forth between the two OS's very easily. Are there any issues with this?
I want to know what the experienced users here would recommend and if there are any problems I will run into.
I need advice on one more thing and that is how muc

Can't figure out how to download ubuntu onto external hard drive
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 22, 2015
I have windows 7 pro and I'm trying to download ubuntu onto a external hard drive with 500GB. I tried burning the 14.04 ubuntu onto a DVD+R and couldn't get it to burn, so I found an external hard drive but all the videos I've found show me that I need to burn the iso onto a dvd+r first. Can some one PLEASE send me a link to a video or walk me through this. All I want to do is have ubuntu downloaded on my external hard drive so when I start my computer I can either boot from my windows hard drive or my external hard drive so I can use ubuntu. I've literally been trying to do this for over 7 hours. I can't figure out how to burn the iso onto my dvd+r or use daemon tools to mount the image.. I've also tried wubi and I get an error. I really badly want to try ubuntu, I'm starting to think it's impossible. please help!
Is it not possible to download ubuntu onto my external hard drive without having a cd?
How to erase hard drive . . .
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 30, 2003
I recently replaced a server (OS linux redhat 7.3) with a new one. Now I'd like to erase the hard drive in the old server to prevent anyone at the host facility from possibly accessing some sensitive data.
The old server is still online, but I'm over 700 miles away and only have net access.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Install Ubuntu from slave hard drive
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 8, 2012
Hello,
I have been reading around for a few hours now and I'm kinda coming up short.
Here's my problem.. A friend asked me to help him with his PC, it appears kinda old, an HP Pavillion 4550Z using windows 98. It was trashed I tried everything and nothing worked so the only option was to wipe it out and start over, except I do not have an operating system.
I have Ubuntu on a flash drive but his BIOS does not appear to allow booting from USB.
I was hoping for a way to put the Ubuntu install onto a slave hard drive and boot from it to install onto the master drive. (slave drive would act like the CD)
Can anyone point me in a direction to do that? I am using windows XP.
Thanks in advance.
using grub from an usb stick to boot ubuntu from a hard drive
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 10, 2009
Hey,
for some time now, since my motherboard would not boot from a SATA drive where my Ubuntu root partition was, I have been using an USB stick with grub installed to boot linux from where my computer would otherwise be unable to. However yesterday as I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my linux partition and copied the necessary entries from the menu.lst generated by the installer to the menu.lst on my USB stick and adding a root command for grub to use the correct partition I get a "Bad file descriptor" error when trying to boot.
I'm stumped as copying boot entries from one configuration file to another worked in the past - I used this system from 8.04 to 9.04 (I ran kubuntu then), but now as I install the vanilla Ubuntu it stopped working. Could there be a reason grub suddenly can't mount my Ubuntu root partition anymore?
The Ubuntu partition in question is ext3.
Thanks in advance
Edit: if do "root (hd2,0)" and then try to "cat (hd2,0)/etc/fstab" (hd
Booting Ubuntu on external hard drive?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 18, 2013
Hey guys!
Wasn't sure which category this problem might fit best, so I settled on posting it here. I was wondering if it were possible for me to boot up the Ubuntu OS from my now external hard drive?
You see, a few weeks ago my laptop decided to no longer work. (It turns on, but doesn't seem to actually do anything.) And because we couldn't figure out the problem, we decided to take out my hard drive, and make it external temporarily. Initially, there wasn't any pressing need for me to attempt to access it until now.
Thing is though, I've never had to do this sort of thing before. And therefore have virtually no idea what I'm doing.
If it's at all relevant, the computer that I currently borrow uses Windows 8. And my hard drive has two partitions on it. Ubuntu 12.04, and Windows 7.
I would love to get back to using Ubuntu again, so help would be very much appreciated! ^^
please wait...
