How to install XFCE on Ubuntu without installing it's default set of apps ?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 7, 2009
Ok, here's what I need - Ubuntu with all it's Gnome applications, but, XFCE desktop environment. I mean, I still need my gedit, and all the other basic stuff from Gnome & installing them on Xubuntu would be .. time consuming.
Is there a way to install XFCE desktop environment without installing mousepad, abiword, etc. ?

How install Ubuntu 12.04 along with Windows 7?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 8, 2013
My new laptop says in the board that is Windows Vista, but it says is Windows 7.
So, since I am already an Ubuntu user, I want to install side by side (in a partition) Linux without losing the Windows.
I tried before but I failed:
I put the Ubuntu 12.04 CD-ROM and re-started the laptop, but nothing happened to the usual Ubuntu window showing up and tell me what to do.
How I do this?
How to install Xfce without xubuntudesktop or ubuntustudiodesktop

I want to install Xfce without xubuntu-desktop or ubuntustudio-desktop (original Xfce 4.10, without extras). I too want to keep Unity (and Unity 2D) on my computer. Are the xfce-meta package great for that?
Thanks in advance!
[SOLVED] Install xfce desktop in Ubuntu 11.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 9, 2011
This is really a "check just to make sure" question. I just don't want to mess my system up by trying something out, without really knowing what it is going to do!
If I have a standard Ubuntu 11.04 install, I can choose when logging in whether I want the new Unity desktop, or Classic Gnome desktop. If I just wanted to try the Xubuntu desktop, without any of its associated applications, what is the correct line to type into the shell? I see on one site they recommend:
sudo apt-get install xfce4 gdm xubuntu-gdm-theme xubuntu-artwork
But there are also other sites that have reported problems getting the standard Gnome desktop back, once someone has tried the xcfe desktop. I wondered if it were possible, at login, to just select which one you wanted, and away you went.
Could anyone clarify a way to download & install just the xcfe desktop, but not the associated applications (Abiword etc), and also confirm that I just select this new desktop at login; and after

My Ubuntu/XBMC install is borked, how do I remove everything and start from scratch?
- date: June 15, 2011
I have internet access and a semi-working Ubuntu install via command line / SSH. XBMC has been running fine until I did an update, then the xorg.conf got ##[email protected]
and I've spent the last 4 hours googling and trying to fix it. I'd love to just reinstall, but I don't have a blank CD or a USB Drive to use.
Is there anyways I can just erase everything and start from scratch? AFAIK it's not possible to run the Ubuntu Minimal install from anywhere but a CD-ROM or USB Stick.
This PC also has access to a Windows directory so I guess I could use WUBI, but would like to avoid that if possible.
Please let me know if you have any advise, thanks.
