virtualization on ubuntu? how fast?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 3, 2009
Hey I am about to start studies in unviersity and my university has msdn connections which will give me free download of windows 7 64 bit. I am running ubuntu 64 bit on a reiserf partition. How fast is it to virtualise windows 7 on ubuntu? I have never attempted virtualization before and it would be helpful to know how well it would perform? I am willing to delete all existing partitions of windows in my machine and just virtualize it if it works well. Like can it run direct x 10 games on virtualization?
I have i7-920 gtx 280/ 6 gb ddr3 on my computer so hopefuly it would run fast. What do you guys think?
[UBUNTU]How to Covert Multiple Jpegs To one pdf file in UBUNTU/Linux
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 22, 2010
One of the most common qs i see in forums is >>> How to convert multiple jpg files to one one pdf file by one click .
I have got 2 solutions that I consider solve this situation to the best ....
*1.* Install SCRIBUS from synaptic package manager . It can convert jpegs to pdf without any issues .
F Spot Photo Manager can also be used .
*2.* This 2nd step I find much better ....
I have been using it myself for some time now ... and its flaw less ...
A) Install WINE using the terminal . For beginers .... Its a software that can run selected windows applications on a linux destro like ubuntu. Installing is very easy >>>> open synaptic manager and in quick search box type Wine. Once the wine files show in the search mark them for installation.
For details on easy manual for wine installation check here ..
B) Now go to the page below .... Its a free software.

VMWare Workstation on Ubuntu how much hardware required?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 1, 2008
Perhaps this should be under hardware it is not a hardware "problem" exactly...
I am back on an old kick of running Windoze in a VM on a Linux box. Started a few years ago but did not have the time to do too much. In a nutshell I have an evaluation copy of VMware workstation which I successfully installed on Ubuntu 6.10 (don't ask about installing on Fedora 7 - my first attempt). I successfully installed Win XP Pro and Win Vista Ultimate (bloat). They each seem to run and can access the network, Internet etc.
I decided to see if I could run both at once. Memory utilization was low ~400 MB per the Ubuntu system monitor. CPU utilization ran high but not always pegged at 100%. However, the hard drive light came on and stayed on and on and I decided to shut down the XP machine. And the light stayed on and on and on... Finally got both VMs shut down after about 15 minutes.
So I am thinking that perhaps I need a 15K rpm SCSI drive or two to build a decent performin
Ubuntu How to determine which process has /dev/ttyUSB0 port open?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 16, 2011
I'm developing a serial port application under Lazarus using the SunaSer code library.
The application reports an error indicating that "the Port is opened by another process".
What command can I execute in a Terminal session to determine what process has the USB-serial port open?

Ubuntu One mount point
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 7, 2009
I've been using UbuntuOne for around a month now and find the mount point for the volume, i.e. in my /home directory, rather annoying.
Anything you drag to it is moved not copied since Ubuntu One disk doesn't appear to be an external volume mounted at root.
Is there a way to change where UbuntuOne mounts? I tried mount to get a list of all mounted volumes but the UbuntuOne disk didn't show up -- unless it has a different name...?
thanks in advance!
fstab entry does not mount nfs share
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 13, 2006
hi to all. i have two machines 'A'(192.168.100.20) and 'B'(192.168.100.21) with dapper loaded. Both machines have two user accounts staff and student consequently i have a two directories /home/staff and /home/student on machine A as well as B.
Now i want these directories to be mounted by machine B at boot time in such way that if user logs in as staff on machine B he should have rw access to the mounted folder A:/home/staff and have no access to A:/home/student. similarly if user student logs in at B he should have rw access to A:/home/student but not to A:/home/staff.
i have installed and started portmap as well as nfs-kernel-server on A. i have also installed portmap and nfs-common on B. now everything works OK and if i mount thru terminal like this:
sudo mount 192.168.100.20:/home/staff /home/staff
it works ok.
but if i write this in /etc/fstab it does not mount the relevant files at boot time:
192.168.100.20:/home/staff /home/staff default 0 0
i mean i can mount manuall
