FreeNAS (BSD) VS ubuntu server setup
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 29, 2008
Dear Linux users,
Recently I got interested in setting up a NAS (network attached storage). I downloaded a small iso is called FreeNAS. FreeNAS is a distro based off of BSD and is a welcome alternative to commercial NAS setups. FreeNAS has a cool option to install to a external memory stick or other such media. With only a 20GB HD running as storage I went with the thumbdrive option. It took about ten minutes to install, the rest was configure the network service from the webgui. I have tried time and time again to get a server setup with other distros, but with FreeNAS I was finally able to get many services up and running without breaking a sweat. I only have a few qualms with this server setup. It would be much better if I had a second ethernet port on the server so I could get updates and download stuff etc while it was connected to other PCs. Secondly the transfer rate is painfully slow 10kb. this would be ok for up loading/download documents but let's say I wanted to upload a
Installing Ubuntu? How easy to go back to Tiger?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 15, 2009
I have a doubt regarding installing Ubuntu (either 8.04 or 8.10) on a PowerBook G4.
I'm pretty sure the answer will "no", but I'd like double check
1. I'd like to install Ubuntu, by wiping the whole HDD, and using it for Ubuntu. Provided I have a Tiger Retail DVD, will I be able to re-install Tiger later, right? With Disk Utility during the install?
2. I have seeing, testing it with the Live CD, that in order to get the wireless adapter running, Ubuntu tries to install a firmware. Would that firmware cripple in any way the future use of the wireless adapter if I install Tiger again?
As usual, TIA

virtualization on ubuntu? how fast?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 3, 2009
Hey I am about to start studies in unviersity and my university has msdn connections which will give me free download of windows 7 64 bit. I am running ubuntu 64 bit on a reiserf partition. How fast is it to virtualise windows 7 on ubuntu? I have never attempted virtualization before and it would be helpful to know how well it would perform? I am willing to delete all existing partitions of windows in my machine and just virtualize it if it works well. Like can it run direct x 10 games on virtualization?
I have i7-920 gtx 280/ 6 gb ddr3 on my computer so hopefuly it would run fast. What do you guys think?
ubuntu cloud setup in vmware/virtualbox
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 2, 2011
I was recently looking into the cloud setup of ubuntu and now would like to setup in my laptop. but in the docs it's mentioned that minimal setup requires at least 2 physical machines.
So that means I can't setup the front-end controller and one node in vmware/virtualbox? But as I have only 1 laptop so is there any way around? I just need the controller and one node to test something.
Thanks in advance
[UBUNTU]How to Covert Multiple Jpegs To one pdf file in UBUNTU/Linux
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 22, 2010
One of the most common qs i see in forums is >>> How to convert multiple jpg files to one one pdf file by one click .
I have got 2 solutions that I consider solve this situation to the best ....
*1.* Install SCRIBUS from synaptic package manager . It can convert jpegs to pdf without any issues .
F Spot Photo Manager can also be used .
*2.* This 2nd step I find much better ....
I have been using it myself for some time now ... and its flaw less ...
A) Install WINE using the terminal . For beginers .... Its a software that can run selected windows applications on a linux destro like ubuntu. Installing is very easy >>>> open synaptic manager and in quick search box type Wine. Once the wine files show in the search mark them for installation.
For details on easy manual for wine installation check here ..
B) Now go to the page below .... Its a free software.

Ubuntu firewall setup for home fileserver
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 20, 2009
I have a computer I use as a fileserver to share legal music, movies and photos across my home network.
It consists of:
1x wireless router, wireless-n, firewall
1x HEADLESS SERVER, ethernet, UBUNTU SERVER LINUX, no firewall
1x desktop computer, ethernet, Fedora Linux, software firewall
1x laptop computer, wireless, Win XP, software firewall
1x desktop computer, wireless, Win XP, software firewall
1x desktop computer, wireless, Win XP, software firewall
Now the router has an SPI firewall on it already, it was a Linksys WRT150N but that died and I'm buying a different one from TP-LINK. But regardless, it will have a firewall on it.
So, should I put a firewall on the Ubuntu server? Is it just doubling up and not really adding any protection? I do use BitTorrent to download Linux distros using it as a downloading machine and may open up ports on it for DHT.
If so, using IPTABLES? Just putting a script in /etc/rc.d and allowing

At least for Ubuntu, I've read that you can temporarily change the MAC address of your wireless NIC with something like:
