Best way to install XFCE (Xubuntu) alongside (Unity) Ubuntu 13.10?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 20, 2013
Hi guys. This is my first post on this forum with this account (my "Ubuntu One" account), however I have posted on here before with an old account back when I was using ubuntu maybe 4-5 years ago. I'm very much a beginner; I went back to windows after using ubuntu those years ago because I preferred it for gaming and was a big gamer back then. I've started to get back into linux, however, and have tried Linux Mint alongside windows, and am now back on to Ubuntu alongside windows.
I'd like to try out the XFCE Desktop Environment to see if I prefer it to Unity.
I understand that this question has been asked before on here, and I did search the forums and found a few threads about it, but none were tailored to my particular question. So, my question is this:
What is the best way to install XFCE alongside Unity? I understand that I could use a Xubuntu live-CD, but I'm looking for a way to work with my current install without doing that. I've heard people mention doing:
[Solved] Hard Drive not showing up on install of ubuntu 8.04/8.10
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 15, 2009
Trying to install ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10 on my desktop. When in the partitioning step of install there is no hard drive showing up to partition.
I have tried doing the wubi install but get a initramfs prompt showing up when booting into ubuntu and nothing after that. I have vista installed on the hard drive and reformatting the drive is not an option.
The hard drive i'm trying to install on is a western digital 500GB SATA drive.
I have tried setting drive to AHCI mode as read from other posts that might help.
Please help, new to linux.
Black Screen following Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 install What Next?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 11, 2009
In short my 120GB Acer Aspire One was running Ubuntu Netbook Remix. I 'upgraded' to 9.10 UNR and all I get is a Black screen.
Now I have the older 9.04 version on a USB stick, but need to know how to have the machine boot this so I can re-install it. The default is the hard disk
at present. Help desperately needed as the item is a promised present having agreed to sell this item to a friend.
What can I do next ?

[SOLVED] Install xfce desktop in Ubuntu 11.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 9, 2011
This is really a "check just to make sure" question. I just don't want to mess my system up by trying something out, without really knowing what it is going to do!
If I have a standard Ubuntu 11.04 install, I can choose when logging in whether I want the new Unity desktop, or Classic Gnome desktop. If I just wanted to try the Xubuntu desktop, without any of its associated applications, what is the correct line to type into the shell? I see on one site they recommend:
sudo apt-get install xfce4 gdm xubuntu-gdm-theme xubuntu-artwork
But there are also other sites that have reported problems getting the standard Gnome desktop back, once someone has tried the xcfe desktop. I wondered if it were possible, at login, to just select which one you wanted, and away you went.
Could anyone clarify a way to download & install just the xcfe desktop, but not the associated applications (Abiword etc), and also confirm that I just select this new desktop at login; and after
HowTo install thunarsharesplugin in xfce 4.10/4.12
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 26, 2013
I really like to have in my box a simply way to share/unshare directories and have control on it directly in Thunar; I'm using Quantal Xubuntu.
Even if is possible to use a "custom actions" in order to share/unshare like stated here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...3#post11505823 I don't like this kind of option.
Since that Xfce have in xfce-goodies a plugin to use samba inside Thunar http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/thu...-shares-plugin but seems that is not mantained anymore (or simply does not works), here a way to install it from the source.
sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-dev xfce4-dev-tools libgtk2.0-dev libthunarx-2-dev libthunar-vfs-1-dev build-essential samba
Create a working directory and get the source:
tar xvzf thunar-share
