Backup Ubuntu 12.04 terminal which directories to backup ?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 1, 2013
I am fascinated with the Linux terminal. I am currently learning how to backup files with tar, gzip, bzip2, zip, and rsync. I have not backed up my system yet and want to do it through the terminal, with the tar command (compressed with the -z option of course). I am stuck I just want to backup the changes I made to the system not the OS. The apps and programs I manually installed are my main concern. I was planning to 2 backup tars. One with the whole /home directory and the other with / and exclude /proc, /media, /system. I need opinions on what to exclude and what to include in my backup. I plan to run the live cd of ubuntu 12.04 and and the directories I need to restore it to my customized version. I would like to do it through the terminal if at all possible.
configuring ubuntu for apache home server
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 16, 2008
hi all.My setup at present is a hp pavillion dv2000 laptop running ubuntu 6.10 edgy eft that is connected to a router which in turn is connected to a cable modem. The router dynamically assigns my ip address from its pool of addresses.Am i right in thinking that i need to configure ubuntu and the router to use a static ip address in order for me to receive inbound requests for apache and to enable stable port forwarding from the router?.Therefore Please could someone tell me how to configure ubuntu-6.10 edgy to come up on the same static address for every boot.I mean the file(s) to put the static address in and the syntax for that file or failing that a way to configure this via a GUI.
Also if static(or is that sticky)dhcp is easier or preferable could someone tell me how to configure that.
Thankx in advance
How to tell Ubuntu from Ubuntu 2D using Terminal Commands Only?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 27, 2013
Hopefully this is a question with a simple answer...
I'm trying to think of a terminal command that will allow me tell if I'm logged in to Ubuntu or Ubuntu 2D.
but they appear to both return identical results in both Ubuntu and Ubuntu 2D.
Is there a simple command that has a different output depending on which environment I'm logged into?

Ubuntu 8.04 Terminal Can you make the terminal window transparent with a wallpaper?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 15, 2009
I have finally learned how to customize my terminal window, but I was wondering if it was possible to have it be transparent with a wallpaper simultaneously? I was also wondering if anyone knew how t change the colors and them of my menu other than just black and white. I have a custom menu button, and would like to make the menu itself look a little different. I saw a vid on youtube where someone had custom colors in there menu. Thanks for the help guys.

Im a very linux noob, (Installed Linux last night) and im just learning my ways around the terminal.
Aside from that, when i use the terminal to download packages/codecs, i get such slow downloading speeds! I get on average 60-130 Kb/s, but if i download like a big file off firefox, i can download at 1 mb + !!
So is their any tweak/port settings i need to change?

Edit sources.list file in Ubuntu Server. Using terminal?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 23, 2010
I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition and would like to add some repositories to the sources.list file.
But being the server edition, there is no GUI.
How can I edit the file?
I did use vi once, but it was not a fun experience.
In gnome I would normally enter "gedit sources.list" and gedit would fire up.
Is there a easier text editor I could use?
Thanks for any advice!
