Ubuntu Where is the correct sources.list file? [closed]
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
Here is my Ubuntu version
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.10
I need the most up-to-date list for /etc/apt/sources.list as I had previously changed a few things around. Any idea where I can find this?
For example, right now I cannot even install nginx (apt-get install ngnix) as my distribution cannot even seem to find it!
Ubuntu Firewall Hostname Redirect
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 22, 2010
this is my first post in this forum...
Here is my situation:
- Linux Firewall as a gateway of my network
- Windows Webserver with IIS 6.0
On the web server there are two sites (i.e. www.site1.com and www.site2.com) running on two different ports (i.e. 80 and 8000). Obviosly the requests comes to the firewall on port 80. How can realize that the firewall redirects the requests of www.site1.com on webserver:80 and www.site2.com on webserver:8000 ?
Thanks a lot,

Machine with Nvidia card:Issues with mount command on ubuntu using hostname
location: linuxexchange.com - date: September 18, 2015
OS: Ubuntu14.04 64 bit
I have a strange problem occuring on machines with Nvidia cards running Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.
The mount command works when using the IP address but fails when using the host name
Not-working command :
sudo -S mount -t cifs //share.test.com/LAB/Testing/Path1/Path2/Requisite/ -o username=blabla,password=blabla /mnt/src_shar_lnx
the error being
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //share.test.com/LAB/Testing/Path1/Path2/Requisite/ ,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
need a /sbin/mount.<type> helper program)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
The above command works seamlessly on other machines without Nvidia cards.
sudo -S mount -t cifs //192.168.200.1/LAB/Testing/Path1/Path2/Requisite/ -o username=blabla,password=blabla /mnt/src_shar_lnx
Where is $PATH set up when Ubuntu boots ?

Silly beginners question here: Where are the initial values for $PATH set up in Ubuntu. What is the equivalent of the DOS "autoexec.bat" file in which paths are set ?
Cant set hostname on Linode Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx
- date: February 19, 2012
We are trying to deploy our Rails app using Passenger and Nginx on a Linode Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid box.
We cant seem to set the hostname from the root IPv6 address of our Ubuntu box.
We get the error:
`ourIPv6`:~# hostname -f
hostname: Name or service not known
when i type in hostname it returns myhost
however when I type in hostname -f it returns hostname: Name or service not known
What would be the necessary action to take to set the hostname?
# Host Database
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.

Using ec2init scripts with Ubuntu on EC2 Automatically set hostname and register with Route53
location: linuxexchange.com - date: March 28, 2011
I'd really like to be able to use the ec2-init scripts to do some housekeeping when I spin up an instance. Ideally I'd like to be able to pass user data to set the hostname and run a couple of initialization scripts (to configure puppet etc.).
I see a script called ec2-set-hostname but I'm not sure if you can use it to set an arbitrary hostname from user-data or what the format of the user-data would need to be.
Anyone used these scripts and know how if can set the hostname and run some scripts at the same time?
Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu to Debian Squeeze > Express Set up
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 21, 2011
I am interested in converting my desktop from Ubuntu 10.10 to Debian 6 but I would like to
--ensure my key packages are included. I have been tweaking the build over time.
--correct device drivers are set up. ( I don't have extended time to just to get audio , codecs , 3d drivers etc running smooth)
I have converted back and forth between the "training wheels version" in the past based on Debian (Ubuntu 9.04 - 10.10 & LM Helena, julia) and would like to know if I can use the same steps to get hardware (video / audio specifically) and all my packages installed.
Using this process has given me a stable system with multimedia that works "out of the box".
Steps taken -->
