windows can't resolve ubuntu lucid hostname (not sending it?)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 23, 2010
I am currently facing one issue with my network. I have several computers and this is what happens, everything works fine when I use the ip address, but when it comes to hostname:
Computer 1 - Windows 7 x64
Computer 2 - Mac OS X / Windows 7
Computer 3 - Ubuntu 8.10 / Windows XP x64 / Windows 7 x64
Computer 4 - Windows Vista
Computer 5 - Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 / Windows XP (This is the one with the problem)
-Windows computers can't ping/see the computer 5 (while it is running linux), but they can see computer 3 while running ubuntu 8.10 and computer 2 while on Mac OS X.
-computers 2 and 3 can see/ping everybody while on Mac/Linux.
-computer 5 can ping everybody.
-computers 1, 2, 3 and 4 (on every OS) can see/ping computer 5 while on windows xp.
Basically, the problem is with computer 5, it can see, but it is not seen by other computers (just when running ubuntu lucid)
Computer 5 is supposed to be a printer server, so it must be seen by the others regardless of
since backtrack 4 is based on ubuntu where is synaptics ?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 15, 2011
i have installed backtrack 4 r2 on a usb pendrive with persistence in order to be able to carry it with my netbook wherever i go.
i understood that backtrack 4 is based on ubuntu, therefore it was really weird for me not to find synaptics package manager in the rc2 (in final it exists)
does anybody know how to get it ?

Switching to Ubuntu, where to begin?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 7, 2011
Hi, I have a server with windows 2008 standard installed along with plesk 8, I would like to move to linux because there is so much work involved trying to keep microsoft windows and plesk up to date, plesk seems easy to exploit and their support is not professional, what I need as a systems manager is to be able to swipe clean my server (all files have been backed up), once I install Ubuntu Server, I need a way to install Apache + PHP + mysql but also I need a way to setup virtual hosts at, http://myserver/myclient1, myclient2 and so on, my clients need to have sftp access into their folders but that directory needs to be locked/jailed so he/she can't get access to other files on the server and other clients by installing a php script to show all files on my server. Sorry for a long post. I've been using Ubuntu Desktop for 5 months now and I love it Thank You, Amy.
ultra slow Ubuntu, where to find useful logs?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 8, 2015
today i'm gone biking leaving my Notebook (Ubuntu 15.04) on.
There was one folder opened in nautilus, 2 inkscape windows in background and Firefox with 3 tabs. I've set Ubuntu to put the screen in standby after 10 mins.
When i came back (1:30 h) the screen was still on and the system was ultra-slow. I moved the mouse and the cursor has moved after 5-10 second doing the movement in 1-2 minutes! I was unable to close or open any windows, so i pressed CTRL+ALT+F1 which has opened a terminal in about 2 minutes.
From the terminal i've tried to login but when i have entered the username i was unable to enter the password and the terminal has returned a login timeout after 60 seconds.
I was going to do the shutdown holding down the power button for some seconds, but I’ve tried to blindly enter some commands in the terminal. I've tried to login, launch a
and type my password. After 1-2 minutes the system rebooted. Now it works fine.

Ubuntu: where is javahome environment variable stored
location: linuxexchange.com - date: June 23, 2013
I have installed java by these commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer
sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-7-oracle
If I understood properly these commands above garantee that java will update automatically.
I have been using Eclipse, STS and Tomcat successfully, then I believe that java is properly installed with its environments.
But I want to know where is the java_home environment. I tried:
gedit /etc/environment I found:
whereis java (I believe that this is just a file find)
java: /usr/bin/java /usr/bin/X11/java /usr/share/java /usr/share/man/man1/java.1.gz
gedit ~/.pam_environment But it is completely empty
gedit ~/.bashrc and after gedit .profile (I believe that this is just script files that run while starting linux). But I didn't find any s

Ubuntu Where is the correct sources.list file? [closed]
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
Here is my Ubuntu version
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.10
I need the most up-to-date list for /etc/apt/sources.list as I had previously changed a few things around. Any idea where I can find this?
For example, right now I cannot even install nginx (apt-get install ngnix) as my distribution cannot even seem to find it!
Ubuntu Firewall Hostname Redirect
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 22, 2010
this is my first post in this forum...
Here is my situation:
- Linux Firewall as a gateway of my network
- Windows Webserver with IIS 6.0
On the web server there are two sites (i.e. www.site1.com and www.site2.com) running on two different ports (i.e. 80 and 8000). Obviosly the requests comes to the firewall on port 80. How can realize that the firewall redirects the requests of www.site1.com on webserver:80 and www.site2.com on webserver:8000 ?
Thanks a lot,
Machine with Nvidia card:Issues with mount command on ubuntu using hostname
location: linuxexchange.com - date: September 18, 2015
OS: Ubuntu14.04 64 bit
I have a strange problem occuring on machines with Nvidia cards running Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.
The mount command works when using the IP address but fails when using the host name
Not-working command :
sudo -S mount -t cifs //share.test.com/LAB/Testing/Path1/Path2/Requisite/ -o username=blabla,password=blabla /mnt/src_shar_lnx
the error being
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //share.test.com/LAB/Testing/Path1/Path2/Requisite/ ,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
need a /sbin/mount.<type> helper program)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
The above command works seamlessly on other machines without Nvidia cards.
sudo -S mount -t cifs //192.168.200.1/LAB/Testing/Path1/Path2/Requisite/ -o username=blabla,password=blabla /mnt/src_shar_lnx
